Odeillo in France in the Pyranees. A bit late, but still confirmation of the correct answer for sure.

Neat, didn't know this even existed. Well worth a look online.

It use to be the hottest solar furnace anywhere on this planet. Not sure if that title remains, but it might.

JE in Chicago came in for the win this week when he guessed the Odeillo Solar Furnace – and pointed out my inability to count and draw at the same time.

The solar furnace is one of three laboratory sites associated with PROMES (PROcédés, Matériaux et Énergie Solaire). PROMES develops “scientific knowledge and technology in the field of solar energy conversion and use, particularly dealing with concentrated solar energy.”

PROMES [pdf] describes their research as including “all the scales of systems, from nanomaterials to energy networks.” They continue to note that the research “two main fields: (1) Materials and extreme conditions (2) Transformation, storage and transport of energy.”

Opened in 1970, according to Wikipedia, the Odeillo Solar Furnace was poised for what PROMES terms the “Growth Years” from 1971 to 1976, during which there was significant “growth in the use of the technology for high-temperature materials development and testing.”
