Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

North American Eagle Selects Diamond Valley for Land-Speed Record Attempts; Sets Speed Limit of 1,500 MPH

Not much exists on the alkali flats of the Diamond Valley in central Nevada. While cattle ranchers and timothy grass farmers keep to the southern end of the valley, the sparse northern end contains a few sage grouse and miles of uninterrupted flat and dry lake bed. And that’s just what Ed Shadle wants for his run to 800 MPH and the world land-speed record.

As his primary competitor, Andy Green in the Bloodhound SSC jet car, begins testing ahead of record runs in 2019 or 2020, Shadle’s relatively low-budget North American Eagle team is coming close to securing permits from the Bureau of Land Management to use the Diamond Valley alkali flats as its ultimate proving grounds later this year and into 2018.

“We’ve spent about 7 years and $37,000 to get these permits,” Shadle said. “We’ll be the first ever to run at Diamond Valley, which is one of the reasons the BLM has been so difficult to negotiate a permit with.”

Shadle eyes speed records over 1,000 mph, if you can believe it.

So what happens when you break the sound barrier on land? What does that shock wave do to a land vehicle?

I think the hardest part of being the fastest land vehicle is, when you hit the record, still being a land vehicle!

Well I don't really see the point, I mean if they want to go fast on land they should ride the rocket sled at mach 8, now that's really moving....6,453 mph!!!

This has become a mere curiosity to me now that they no longer use engines with pistons.

And let's face it in the horsepower race, it all ends here:
