The new railroad promised to bring Kansas cities closer together. Unfortunately, nobody predicted what that would do to the tracks.

Branson Missouri amusement park employees put the finishing touches on the "Loco Loco".

It's said to put the fear of God into all. Much moreso than previous thrill ride "The paddle board without a paddle".

Noticed Any Ripples in Your Water Recently ?

Upon the recent release of the FBI-confiscated Tesla papers, a strange rash of Chladni figures began appearing across the landscape.

The New MythBusters lawyers will not confirm nor deny any part in their genesis despite their recent purchase of the used seismic vibrator truck named the T-Rex from the University of Texas. They also categorically deny rumors of an upcoming
show entitled "Large Scale Oscillons as Performance Art" scheduled to be aired on the anniversary of Tesla's birthday. Adam Savage and other MythBuster executives insist that recent malicious accusations from local railroad officials are only based on the shakiest of evidence.

I'd never heard of Chladini or his figures, so I looked him up. Very interesting! Wikipedia says that he's considered the father of acoustics, a claim I'll verify with a friend's daughter who just completed a degree in MechE/acoustics. Thanks for this new piece of knowledge.

James Burke - ish Connections

A few years back, I attended the Open House at (The University of Texas) UT where they were demonstrating the T-Rex oil exploration vehicle. They had a shallow metal pan of water on the ground to help visitors visualize the operation of the truck. I made up the part about the MythBusters buying the equipment. Anyway, as I watched the patterns in the pan of water it reminded me of a book I had read decades ago on Luthiers(master violin makers) which had speculation that the great masters may have sprinkled sand on their violin parts to tune them. I think the book had the Chladni reference. It turns out that UT also coined the oscillon term for certain soliton related phenomena in granular material. If you saw that James Burke series on TV a decade ago, then you may understand how these technological advances seem to form an intricate web of "Connections" and I was struck that this set of connections seemed to be surrounding me. My son is having his Masters in Civil Engineering graduation ceremony at UT today. Almost spooky !

I've seen this pic before my friends, so...

April 1: Engineer (Phil Collins) to foreman:

Well if you told me you what you were up to, I would not lend a hand
I've seen your face before my friend, but I don't know if you know who I am
Well I was there and I saw what you did, I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off that grin, I know where you've been
It's all been a pack of lies

Statistically this section represents such a small part of the railway system that it doesn't need to be fixed. Any engineer should know that.

When Casey Jones slammed on his brakes, they had a surprisingly good grip.

This is quite a famous one in railway circles. It shows the effects of high rail temperatures on continuous-welded rail that has had to endure an earthquake.

New Zealand, 3ft 6in gauge. The date is missing, sadly. Imagine hitting that on an 800-ton coal train doing 50mph!

English Rose
The inspector pointed out that the contraction allowances should be evenly spaced along the run, not saved up and used all at once.

When I said build it according to the drawings, I MEANT build it according to the DRAWINGS!

You got the squiggles sideways! Now, redo it, and do it RIGHT this time!
