Pneumatic vs Electric Linear Actuators — You Decide

Posted September 07, 2007 8:20 AM

Design News considers the consequences of selecting pneumatic or electric control for linear motion applications. Besides listing the pros and cons of each control strategy, this tutorial presents some critical questions to bear in mind when making a decision. For example, "Are there static or dynamic loads being placed on the actuator?" What about sizing and cost? Most important, attention must be given to the application itself.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Pneumatics, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Pneumatics today.

Great question. Pneumatic vs. Hydraulic vs. Electro-Mechanical vs. Hybrid; each has its merit. Does the application require straight replacement or is improved precision and position accuracy the goal?
