"Green" Ships Are Not All at Sea

Posted September 13, 2007 10:10 AM

In what may be the wave of the future, all three of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration's Great Lakes research ships are now operating on bio-based vegetable products — 100% soy biodiesel for fuel, canola-based motor- and hydraulic oil for deck equipment, transmission, and steering gear. The result is not only reduced emissions but "improved ship performance, and crew health and safety." Biohydraulic oils have worked well without affecting pump or other equipment performance. Next in the program are field tests and continuing evaluation of the bio crankcase and hydraulic oils, as well as biodiesel engine operation.
