Stepper Takes on Servo in CNC Systems

Stepper motors have long been used in Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools, but precision control with steppers can slow throughput. This reader asks the machine experts if a servo motor would be better, and for a number of reasons — such as cost, return on investment, and 3X throughput requirements — the experts say yes, servos are better.
