Guilty Pleasure: Rube Goldberg Machines - Why do you get me every time?

Posted September 26, 2006 9:18 AM by stilljester

As an 'engineer' I'm always looking for the best most efficient solution to any problem but I've got to be honest I've always had a soft spot for these machines / creations. Every time I pass one in an airport, museum or the street I can't help but to stop and stare... So many of these machines illustrate perfectly some great principles/laws of physics. I'm sure I'm not the only one who likes to analysis these devices.

While its an older ad this one is currently my favorite (at least favorite of the week)

Honda Accord Rube Goldberg Machine

*Click Me*

Brief Background: This Advertisement for the new Honda Accord was shot in real time with no CGI involved in the sequence. It required 606 takes and cost $6 million to shoot and took 3 months to complete.

Still one of the best commercials ever made...

This commercial ad is at least a couple of years old. I read that it took a couple of hundred "takes" and cost a ton of money. One of the best!

The backstage of Honda Accord is impressive. I see it in TV. I love The Incredible Machine Contraptions. Is the better mode to create and test Rube-Goldbergs also changing gravity and alttitude.

It is a bit ironic that:

"This Advertisement for the new Honda Accord was shot in real time with no CGI involved in the sequence. It required 606 takes and cost $6 million to shoot and took 3 months to complete."

when the tagline for the commercial is:

"Isn't it great when things just....work?"

After 605 tries? Three months to get it right? Or did they seamlessly splice together all those takes that were shot in "real time"?

Whether or not everything is as it seems, it is highly entertaining!

If they were splicing it all together I would hope it didn't take 600+ tries. As I understand it the video is one continuous shot which is why it took so many tries. Also why I find it so interesting is if you break the machine down piece by piece so many on the actions just barely happened – I'm impressed it only took 600 tries
