Hi All. A quick update on the 3rd Annual GlobalSpec Great Moments in Engineering Award Presentation. The event went off yesterday at the Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago honoring the engineering team from Motorola that developed the first portable cell phone.
Here's an exclusive on scene report from Tom Brownell, GlobalSpec's Senior VP Production & Engineering and one of the company's founders:
"The actual job of building the phone...Not an easy task but fairly typical in the life of an engineer. A lot of the pieces were already in place or on the way and they just had to accelerate everything and pull it all together. The reason for the crash program was to beat AT&T to the punch and get the FCC to recognize that there were other and better options than what the big monopoly AT&T was proposing. The success was also made possible because of the vision and support by the management of Motorola gave to the engineering team but the management already got all their accolades...
...It was great to meet the honorees and hear their stories surrounding the invention of the DynaTac cell phone. It was also most gratifying to meet their spouses and families to get their perspectives and to see how they were all very appreciative of the recognition. After all that is why we created the Great Moments in Engineering Award, doing our part to support the engineering community."
