Let’s Rename a Building after a True Hero

This week, Warwick High School of Newport News, Virginia removed Michael Vick's football jersey from its trophy case. The future NFL quarterback played at Warwick High for two seasons before matriculating to Virginia Tech, where he led the Hokies to an 11 – 0 season and a trip to the Nokia Sugar Bowl.

Long before graduation, Michael Vick left Virginia Tech and was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons. He enjoyed several Pro Bowl seasons, but was suspended by the NFL in August 2007 after pleading guilty to federal charges related to an interstate dog-fighting ring. The man who once posed affectionately with his dogs now faces state charges in Virginia for beating and killing animals.

Today, a framed portrait of Michael Vick hangs beside the entrance to Michael Vick Hall on the campus of Virginia Tech University. In August, the college's athletic director, Jim Weaver, told the Chronicle of Higher Education that the quarterback's name and picture should stand because "Michael Vick earned those honors when he was an undergraduate, long before the dog-fighting activities". Jim Weaver has been asked to remove Vick's images, but Virginia Tech refuses to follow the example of Warwick High School.

There are many things wrong with college sports, but Jim Weaver's notion of "honor" is particularly disturbing. Long before Michael Vick ever set foot on campus, Virginia Tech hired Dr. Liviu Librescu, a Romanian-born aeronautical engineer. Professor Librescu taught courses in engineering and mathematics for over 20 years. He also published more than 1000 academic papers and served on the editorial boards of 7 scientific journals. Librescu may have been a dedicated academic, but a former colleague remembers the engineer as "strong and dignified" with "a huge affection for his students".

In death, Liviu Librescu demonstrated a strength, dignity and respect for life that Michael Vick will never achieve. On April 16, 2007, Dr. Librescu was murdered by a deranged student named Seung-Hui Choi. As Choi entered Virginia Tech's Norris Hall, Professor Librescu was teaching a class – one of many he had led during a long and distinguished career. As gunshots claimed the lives of the first of 32 victims, the 76-year old professor used his body to barricade a classroom door so that students could open windows and jump to safety.

It's time for Virginia Tech to remove a disgraced athlete's images from Michael Vick Hall, and to rename the building after a true hero – Liviu Librescu

I think it's a shame that Virgina Tech is going to continue "honoring" a man like Michael Vic, who didn't even end up graduating from their University. It's sad to me that Vic's football career is being held in higher esteem than a man surrendering his life. Moose, I completely agree with your statement saying that it's time for a true hero to be remembered. Not only should Liviu Librescu be honored for his actions on the day of the Virginia Tech shootings, but for everything that he accomplished and overcame throughout his entire life.

Who paid for the new wing, they usually get to decide on the names for new facilities at east coast universities. Maybe to purchaser of the new facilities, in the process of bribing the university, deserves some acknowledgement for his huge donation. One thing i can say is at least Michael Vick accomplished something, many campuses have facilities named after contributors of little significance.

It seems the "higher up" we honor our fellow man, the more we make a fool of ourselves. NEVER put your faith in man, but of GOD! James

What now we have dogfights and now godfights?

We should place religion in it's proper place as superstition.

I agree the Professor needs to be honoured, and it is reasonable for a man of great honour to replace a man of broken honour.

That is what vic has done, he has broken faith we we who honoured him. The facts of his past achievements remain, but we need no longer think of him as an honorable man or revere him in anyway

You are wrong. Without Vick the university would not be in the national spotlight, and thus be missing out on huge research opportunities because fewer people are aware of the university's capabilities. Keep Vick's name up and just name a new building after Librescu. Kudos to Weaver for sticking to his guns.

Michael Vick Hall does put Virginia Tech in the spotlight, but that's the wrong type of publicity for a reputable institution. As for missing "huge research opportunities", I don't see the correlation between academic funding and grants. Schools like MIT don't have football teams that make it to the national championship, but there's no shortage of great research - or big bucks - at MIT, Harvard, etc.

In the end, Michael Vick Hall makes Virginia Tech look like a school that cares a lot about athletics, and very little about right vs. wrong. As for folks like Mr. Weaver, I'd encourage him to leave the safety of Michael Vick Hall every so often, and take a look at the larger world around him.

I agree--without Vick's athletic ability in his years at VT, many, many people wouldn't even have heard of VT. Now don't get me wrong is it a very prestigious research university but it would never had the national name recognition it received without Vick. The university received millions of dollars because of his expertise on the playing field. Give Vick a break, admittedly he made some bad mistakes, but let's let him get his life back in order and move on!!
