Mother Nature's Technology Transfers

Posted October 15, 2007 8:19 AM

Why not take tried-and-true designs from Mother Nature and apply them to manmade products? This rhetorical question continues to be an intrinsic success story in a myriad of technical breakthroughs across many industrial sectors for years. Recent examples include:

· Mother Nature Perfects Pump Designs

· Mussels + Geckos = Wet-Dry Adhesive

· Mother Nature's Seagoing Sonar

· Hook and Loop Fasteners

Although Mother Nature holds no patents, inventors adapting her designs can. What other examples of "Mother Nature" technology do you know of?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Fastening, Joining & Assembly, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Fastening, Joining & Assembly today.

What about those fishermen that use light to lure the fish to their nets. There are ugly things deep down that do that with chemical light.

What about glue?

There are loads of animals that use glue in their attempts to catch a meal. I know we don't eat what we glue but still the principle is the same.
