If You Never Aged, How Long Would You Live?

Posted November 16, 2007 12:51 PM

From Discover | RSS:

Each year, American adults have, overall, a 1-in-1,743 chance of dying in an accident. That means that even if nothing else killed you—doing away with old age and disease—you would on average live to be 1,743 years old before a fatal accident. But you could do better. A 9-year-old child has much lower odds of accidental death, about 1 in 10,000. If we could keep everyone to this low rate (avoiding work and driving would probably help), we could typically live 10,000 years. About 37 percent of the population would do better yet, living on average to the ripe old age of 20,000, says James Vaupel, director of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research.

Is this a maths or science calculation , somebody wants to live that long has to go in hibernation , s/he must live away from planet , you forgot natural disasters , terrorist attacks or they are considered accidents and smoking and drinking , If a person lives for 10,000 to 20,000 years he need not reproduce or he may end up seeing 1000`s of his generations dying in accidents (obiviously), it is curious to know what biologist have to say for evolution............

"Is this a maths or science calculation,,,"

Neither math nor science. It a simple minded child's "What if," type question for lack something profitable to ask.

.....just little better off from those "free energy "topics falsely proved by physics and maths..

I've had the pleasure to meet many sprightly people aged 80, 90, 100 +. A lot have more wit than the average teen . Most don't. I can think of no reason why I would want to extend my lifetime to that extent. Sure I enjoy life, and would be remorse at leaving others behind. But isn't that the point ? Give others their chance to 'live'. Even if we could live to 2000, some people would still want more. There's something slightly sick in wanting to live forever. Enjoy what you have and make the most of it. I probably fail (like most) to do the latter, and will probably only realize when it's too late. That's life. Stop what we consider 'premature' death, but forget artificial 'longevity' stuff. It's the ultimate ego wish.

Apart from the scientific ****** of that report, do you really want me posting inane replies here in 100 years ? Thought not. Sorted then isn't it.

Nice one Kris.... spot on.

And, anyhow the whole KrisDelTM product range would become unmanageable in a few 100 years.

My lock up is alread overflowing, and the stuff that Stinky Pete has stashed for us...well it's not quite the same any more is it?

Boonsri Dickinson that concocted this pieces stipulates it assumes "—doing away with old age and disease—"

He is a dyed in the wool optimist if he expects to do that in his lifetime or many generations to follow him. The question could be used as a debate topic but to no practical end.

Diseases pop up, seemingly out of nowhere faster than vaccines can be developed to stop them. Infectious agents grow more resistant to antibiotics daily.

The effects of time work wear and tear on the human body daily. Time is the irresistible force taking its toll on all living things as well as inannimate objects. The Universe itself is slowly but surely cooling down to absolute zero and entropy is increasing to a maximum at the same time.

That dog wont hunt...It's barking up the wrong tree. Maybe it's had too much TIC.

The newspapers here occasionally publish reports that scientists believe that in X years, we will all be living to 200+ yrs old. Always, X is always further out there than the population will normally live.

Maybe that isnt such a good thing.

Ever wonder whether life is punishment and when we succumb to old age or accident, etc. whether we might find things are better.

Heard a joke recently about a husband and wife, very much in love. To prolong longevity, the wife decides that they should followe all the healthy habits including each eating a bran muffin every day. [For 20 years, the wife insists they eat only low calorie foods and always have a bran muffin.] Well, they die, and when they get to Heaven the husband goes on a tour alone with St. Peter. Everything is great: St Peter tells him he can play golf all day long or do whatever he wishes, and there are no costs for anything (its all free). Later in the tour, he's being shown around the restaurant in the heavenly cafeteria and sees all the fancy deserts and lusicous food. He says to St. Peter, "Where are the bran muffins" and he replies "There are none, because everyone is healthy here."

The man goes and finds his wife and tells her, "See, if you hadnt forced me to eat bran muffins every day I could have been here 20 years ago."

I wasn't going to read that because it looked long , then I did. Completely OT but hilarious. Golfing cats beware. I won't continue since this place brings me near to death laughing every day anyway.

Ask God, to give what you really deserve and for sure you will live as much as you deserve.

I could think of a few long term projects (real long) I would do, but after that boredom, entropy, madness. A whole planet of such, no thanks. At least not until we grow up some.

Yes but we have always to dare to go a little beyond our "limits" and have a sens of humor surrounded by our reality

I would have difficulty documenting this, because I have not pursued it as a formal investigation, but my readings over the years have led me to believe that the human body is designed for about 120 years of life. While one might be able to re-engineer this limit, one must ask, "Why?" Also, one must be very careful about what one wishes for- your wishes just might be granted...

I can use the same liberty those "researchers" used to propose a model world where there are no diseases, no wars, no crime, no accidents either, where people will live for ever. Maybe I could limit the life expectancy a bit by using the statistics of someone eating a forbidden fruit, for example.

Anyway, even if this is taken simply as a school-level "what if" story, it's still wrong by considering the present accident rate to be valid in a world where people live for millenia and consequently the world's population will count up to some gazillions.

It seems to me that some people desire the impossible- there is evidence that off-spring life is limited to a certain number of heart beats, for instance- so nothing you can do will extend "determined" parameters- as set mainly by your genetic make-up- then again, define life- the atom is said to be eternal- then again, maybe belief in a God could extend your brief manifestation in your present form, to a more permanent existence (as an angel- or devil?)- live on- all will be revealed in the fullness of time(whatever that is)-maybe.

The definitive answer cannot be calculated using statistical methods.

There are problems other than ageing or accidents.

The joints in the body are designed to last for around 120 years, if not overloaded.

These joints do not "age", but physically wear out, because unknowingly, people load their joints more than the designer intended.

This causes arthritis, and accompanying pain etc.
