Open Source Comes to Cars

Open-source is a term that most associate with software products like Linux, Wikipedia, and sources of intellectual property, but might open-source also work for less ethereal products such as cars? Can cars even communicate with each other to avoid accidents? Engineering design professionals in Europe and North America think so.
