Will Software As A Service Fly?

Posted December 13, 2007 8:20 AM

Buying software as a service could be very user friendly, perhaps providing users freedom from upgades, bug fixes, service package updates, etc. — of course, that infers all the software needed to do one's job is available at a reasonable price. On the downside, such services would probably increase in cost each year, especially if all the bells and whistles are included. What if your Internet connection goes offline, can you still work? Does this appear to be a cost-viable solution? We'd like to hear your thoughts.

Some commercial packages have a several year support package that includes fixes and some upgrades. The problem is keeping up with it. For a pc use it seems to be more effective to develop a software package that fetches upgrades and patches from the internet. Something that can located specific sites on a regular basis. Something that scans the PC for registered programs, finds patches and notifies of upgrades. The upgrade part would be more an issue as there is usually some fee. Every high end program I have always has some patch associated with it that I don't know is there until a problem jumps up.
