Industrial Ethernet: Growing and Growing

Posted December 25, 2007 7:42 AM

Market research firm ARC Advisory Group projects that the worldwide market for hardened industrial Ethernet switches and other types of industrial Ethernet network infrastructure is growing at a 29% annual clip. The report predicts the market will reach nearly the $1 billion mark by 2011. ARC's report finds that today, Ethernet reaches only a fraction of the devices that use industrial device networking, and notes that many other types of industrial networks have also been expanding during the past few years. The report's authors expect stronger migration to industrial Ethernet over time.

How do you see industrial Ethernet use growing in manufacturing applications?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Data Acquisition, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Data Acquisition today.

Only 29%? I would have expected more.

It is what I spec out on everything. The speed, deterministic nature, easily available cables and switches, inexpensive (relatively) cable crimpers, what's not to love?

Virtually every manufacturer supplies (at least as an option) an ethernet interface. And since it is not proprietary, you are not tied to 1 manufacturer.

Hello Kilowatt0!

I would disagree with you this matter. For most cases of industrial needs traditional protocols (rs485, 422, Modbus etc.) are more preferable owing to its known advantages. Industrial objects needn't a huge bandwidth and traffic to be controlled. Therefore for "low-level" applications it's believed to change nothing. But for further "high-level" system integration (if it really is needed for big plant) where demands for traffic is growing up, yes , ethernet is pretty suitable thing to be applied. So to my mind figure 29% reflects objective situation.

The Best thing is enemy the good one.

It's only my opinion.

Best regards.

I would agree with the Authors of the Article.

Industrial Ethernet has a fast-growing future.

Many earlier Industrial data links just will not be able to handle the volume of control and process data required by new generations of production machinery and equipment.

Better get used to it now.

Kind Regards....
