October 31: The First Jack O'Lanterns

Pathfinder Tags: Halloween history October 31

The technology of Halloween has changed in many ways since the days of ancient Ireland and the legend of Stingy Jack. The first jack o'lanterns were lit with coal and made of hollowed-out turnips, beets, rutabagas, gourds, or potatoes. Carving pumpkins into jack o'lanterns did not become popular until millions of Irish immigrants came to the United States during the 1880s. Today's pumpkin carvers can use electric tools instead of metal knives and electric bulbs instead of coals or candles. Trick or treat!
