What's the Real Story on Computing's Carbon Footprint?

With everything going toward "green" technology, it seems apparent that computing operations worldwide will be heading in that direction. Reportedly, one server has the same environmental impact or carbon footprint that a 15-mpg SUV has. If that is indeed the case, it appears that an estimated billion computers globally plus all the other IT equipment around the world needs some serious redesigning. What do you think should be done?
