Calling All Passengers...

Posted January 12, 2008 8:13 AM

A cell phone has an LCD display—why not use it to display barcodes? A trial by Continental Airlines allows users to display boarding passes on their cell phone screen, rather than printing them out. The video shows it saves trees, and shows how ubiquitous small screens are becoming. Is this a good idea?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Display Technologies, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Display Technologies today.

Personally, I am against the use of cell phones on airplanes or in an airport, considering that it is a relatively easy matter to discharge explosives with cellphones to be used as a trigger.

Not just cell-phones for that act.

Garage door openers, car alarm/unlock remotes (actually most remotes can be used for that purpose) pagers, 2-way radio's, why not have 1 connected to a motion sensor that sticks to the roof, then you can activate with x amount of movement.

Phones are not that dangerous, its just the application of the technology that makes them dangerous

The problem I see is the size of the screen, the amount of information to be displayed and the accuracy of the readout, looking at the size of the display in the "demo" how many people walk around with that sized screen phone? I know a few people.

Why not give each person a 1-wire memory dongle, they just then present that dongle when they go to board, get to the other end and hand it in, so its then recycled.

I could say go the other way with mobiles and use the IR port, but mine doesn't have one, I know there are a few parking meters in the city that utilise the IR port to pay the parking meters..
