More Than a Drop in a Bucket?

Posted April 08, 2008 8:25 AM

To help avoid tainted food products from China in the future, the FDA has announced plans to create eight positions at U.S. diplomatic missions in China. The new staff will work alongside Chinese inspectors at food plants whose products are destined for the U.S. market. This new action follows "memorandums of understanding," governing food, drugs and medical devices, agreed on by the U.S. and China late last year. With literally hundreds of Chinese plants turning out FDA-monitored products, what do you think of this new effort to ensure quality imports?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Quality Control, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Quality Control today.

Thats right throw bureaucracy at the problem.

Frankly, China handle the problem quite efficient and effectively see;

maybe thats what this country should do with ineffective bureaucrats

Nice link.

That method would definitely "correct" a few politicians

Yowzah! Get a rope - find a tree... I like it - it's simple, effective, easy to remember - a good plan!

Hello Enviro!

Yes it looks simply but I think China done and does its best to track a quality of goods as one so scared to lose a market positions. I do see that it's more political or bureocracy motivated approach. How could you imagine if someone from oversee come at your home to track how you're working?

As I know some US firms being partners of their Chinese counterparts had passed tainted goods to market. What will be do their quality departments' staff now? Vocation for 18 months?

But only if this plan for the sake of nobody sentenced to death penalty ever --- I would agree that it can be called as "good plan", no matter its real efficiency.

Best regards.

Heck, I/we wouldn't mind the oversight - we have no secrets and no lack of quality control. Bring 'em on!

I do know that US has very strong quality control and last year scandal was really "drop in sea" to compare with overall Chinese export.

No matter what your Govt intends to do if it prevent any causes with death penalty --- I vote for that by both my hands.

Next question personally for you just for my education. As I know everyone Chinese company does posses an international quality certificate like ISO 9001 and so on. And it is so long and costly process to get this kind of certificate. Would you like explain me for what it needs if your officers will be there at all for checking. Does it mean that Chinese side can be relaxed now as your people will be sharing responsibility for feasible consequences? To suppose what happened if your officer(s) passed non-quality product (or approving non-proper technology)? We are all people and can be wrong. This case I suppose Chinese govt looks more far than yours.

First, I too oppose the death penalty in all but making the threat available. Sometimes fear of consequences is more effective than the consequences would be.

Second, what does it mean to have 8 US inspectors on duty in China? I don't really know, but here's my opinion. Essentially nothing. It makes our government look like it is doing something useful, but in reality, it will just be 8 politically connected bureaucrats being paid a scandalously good salary for being on vacation for the duration. They'll visit a few factories and processing plants, they'll look over the facilities, they'll say "um-hum" intelligently, and "harrumph!" wisely, and make suggestions here and there, some of which might actually be useful (whether paid more than lip service to is another matter). I seriously doubt much good will come of it all, not even likely, much goodwill. But then, I'm a professional skeptic and natural-born pessimist, so maybe I'm out in left field on this.

(Sorry, if any of my idioms escape you, please let me know...)

Thank you so much for your complete answer. Very wit and funny. In my land we used to say that "pessimist is just an optimist but informed".

Every good luck to you.

P.S. I do think that your officers/inspectors are good and honest people --- they only should do what decided a politicians at all.

Oh, sure, the're good, and likely honest, and all that, but they will have marching orders from the politicians-in-charge to do no serious work. I'm a cynic, not a critic!

The death sentence for corruption has long been in place in China. Unfortunately, it likely serves only to make the corruption go deeper and be more hidden, since the crime is being caught.
