The Best Way To Cook Hot Dogs: by Tesla Coil [Zap]

Posted May 06, 2008 8:37 AM

From Gizmodo:

The most exiting way to cook hot dogs: connect a chain of 12 of them up and send bolts of multi-thousand-volt electricity through them. Awesome, and all thanks to the Nevada Lightning Lab and their 10-foot Tesla coil at Maker Faire '08. And amazingly, the coil they used is just a prototype for a 122-foot version they want to build for lightning experiments. Imagine the light show and cookability you'd get from that!

The video was not very if at all spectacular.

From the sound it appeared to be either a Wimshurst machine or a Van de graff HV generator instead of a tesla coil.

"..bolts of multi thousand volt electricity through them.."

Obviously not a lot of electrical knowledge hiding inside that reporter.

"Multi thousand volt electricity" is the politically correct version. "Mega", or "kila" can be construed as being boastful. "Micro" or "Mili" is to small and may make voltages feel inferior. I am curious of the research that Tesla did on the "cookability" of the Wardencliff tower. Please don't take me wrong , I am all for the roasting of meats in new and exciting ways. I would be willing to taste test some "laser" cooked hot dogs, only if they agree to use lower powered "sub-multi wattage lasers" .

Sure, this is cool - but there is no way that it tastes as good as hotdogs cooked over an open fire.

I do agree 100% . I am thinking a nice bed of glowing oak, with a bit of apple or peach tree wood smoking the delightful dogs.

Definitely a Van de Graaf machine.

And there are far cheaper and more eco-friendly ways to cook the meat.

Disappointing, really, because of the poor definition.

Kind Regards....
