What's Our Connection to the Platypus?

Posted May 09, 2008 8:39 AM

From Scientific American:

The platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is an odd-looking creature whose features combine the furry torso and wide, flat tail of a beaver with the rubbery bill and webbed feet of a duck. But its looks are not all that is strange about it. A new study indicates that the distinctive mammal's genetic code is an eclectic brew of bird, reptile and mammal.

"A new study indicates that the distinctive mammal's genetic code is an eclectic brew of bird, reptile and mammal."

Does that make it a third cousin?

That which proves too much proves nothing.

If the studies provide some helpful results for the advancement of mankind, wonderful. Otherwise.....

ALL knowledge results in the advancement of mankind, Sir (or Madam, as the case may be). Myths, on the other hand, tend to hinder the advancement of mankind...

There are some very strange animals in Australia.

Kangaroos and their relatives the wallaby, also naturally do not appear in other countries.

Kind Regards....

Since the birds are very closely related to the dinosaurs, it seems that one of the very early furry, instead of feathered, varieties could have given rise to the ancestral forms of the platypus and that marsupials and mammals branched off from that line very early. Before that branching Australia had become separated from the rest of the world and there were only monotremes and marsupials in the world. They were isolated in Australia and regular mammals did not appear there until brought in by Man.

It is fascinating to see how God shaped the living "dust" into all the various creatures of the world. Without God there would be no evolution, just accidents.
