Data centers warming the planet

Posted May 14, 2008 9:03 AM

From Newlaunches.com:

What do you think are the big internet companies doing when they say they are going green? One single Google search query consumes 2 to 8 watt-hours of energy. To put this on a scale, Google processes petabytes of information on a daily basis while indexing the web and doing other various things. If we average this out to 4.5 watt hours per query, and consider Google is easily handling 400 million queries a day based on comScore metrics, then we can see 1,800,000,000 (1.8 billion) watt-hours of energy being used daily just for basic search queries.

Wow, I know in this "Information Age" that information is a hot commodity but I didn't realize how hot. At an average of about 18 KWH per home per day thats enough power for about 100,000 homes. Not to mention the power we all expend doing the clicking.

Nothing compared to the traveling to the library, or across the world just to talk with someone, or the books and magazines printed, or the time and energy lost due to things done wrong, slowly, or not at all. Bring on the searches. It cools the earth!

I just did a Google Search on "Data centers warming the planet". It took 0.58 seconds to bring up about 1.4 million hits. 0.58 seconds is 1/6200th of an hour. Even at the low end of 2 Watt-hours per search, this would require an average power of 12.4 kW. If this is true, most of that power must be used to run air conditioners. They need to move those data centers to northern climes where the computers can heat the buildings!

Yeah, the A/C costs are huge! For a big data center, fully HALF the energy consumed is in the A/C units. In fact, the number of servers in a data center is limited by the number of HVAC units they can fit on the roof & around the grounds!

No lie!

High-tech chip makers are busting a gut to create lower-energy solutions for servers. It's a huge market - and because of the A/C problem, every watt of power saved in the chips is a watt of power saved in the A/C as well.

Google & Co. are eager to grab any chance to save power because it would save SO much money. Not to mention the great PR boost they would get for going green!

It is remarkably efficient.

Calculate the energy required, to physically visit all the libraries at your disposal, then you can see how truly efficient internet Search Engines really are.

Kind Regards....

Wrong thing to worry about. Compare energy costs of doing the same things without a computer and how much heat those activities would release. Data centers actually are a net savings in energy use and heat released. Only a mind-numbed Algore GW hysteric would react in this way. Does he really think that Google wants to just throw all that heat and money away? They are constantly thinking of cheaper ways to operate and new ways to make money. Quoting big numbers for effect doesn't impress anyone intelligent, this is to impress those who are natural Luddites that technology is bad.
