Black Holes Don't Trap Information Forever

Posted May 16, 2008 9:04 AM

From Slashdot:

New calculations suggest that black holes are not a one-way street. Anything that falls into them may eventually come out. The findings lend important support to quantum gravity, but fly in the face of Einsteinian relativity. They also support Stephen Hawking's reluctant admission that information couldn't be destroyed by black holes. Penn State researcher Ahbay Ashtekar was quoted saying, 'Once we realized that the notion of space-time as a continuum is only an approximation of reality, it became clear to us that singularities are merely artifacts of our insistence that space-time should be described as a continuum.' Let the physics infighting begin.

Nothing traps 'information' what a stupid title...

One can trap the medium which is transmitting the information.
Lets have a nice argument about semantics and pedantry... or not?

You Wrote: "Nothing traps 'information' what a stupid title..."

As I think you already know, there is a school of physics that views information as a fundamental quantity. The field is related to the concept of entropy first introduced in Thermodynamics.

It's a novel way to look at physics, but I'm still partial to energy being the fundamental quantity that matters the most. Still, the attempts at creating a conservation of information are informative and there is definitely some good and innovative science behind it. The danger seems to be a tendency to proselytize information as the end all be all quantity that matters, and I think that misses the mark.

I think the best approach for this branch of physics is to appreciate the concepts while maintaining a skeptical eye towards any unsupported extrapolations.

I suspect however that you are already disinterestedly curled up on some chair contemplating your next saucer of milk. Ultimately, this is probably the best approach.

Hmm, I'd not met the theory...
I skim read the link, I couldn't see any separation of information from some sort of media to 'carry' it... thus I still maintain my stance that it is the media not the information which is significant.
After all the media has no 'interest' or 'knowledge' of the information (or entropy) it contains.

Does a CD care if it has a movie or software burnt onto it? Neither will survive a furnace or a good stiff wire brush... (oooh I do like a good stiff brushing)

Maybe I'm off the boil on this and maybe a thread to discuss such weighty matters is in order?

No I wasn't curled up yesterday..
I was at WEMBLEY watching Portsmouth win the FA Cup...

Play up POMPEY
POMPEY play up.....

We are the Blue Army,
This is what we sing
We are PORTSMOUTH
We are PORTSMOUTH
Harry is our King...

The reason for black holes is all the interstellar debris just a'lurking around.

These well-designed vacuum cleaners move around automatically, to suck up the rubbish, before the rubbish breeds like the dust mice under your bed.

The alternative to dust mice, is to invite Del the cat to have a holiday at your home.

Kind Regards....

Oh, so the hypothetical black holes aren't understood after all! This is a major admission of ignorance from the 'establishment'. The implications could re-right the Big bang theory once again. It's good to see the know-it-alls get caught with something they don't understand.

This is how science works. And why science works so well. Only the most ignorant people think they have all the answers.

Although I believe based upon what I've read (in other words, just my opinion) that black holes are a real and have been proven to exist, and your statement seems to be suggesting that black holes aren't real or are in doubt for some reason (correct me if I'm misinterpreted your statement). Ordinarily I'd be inclined to argue the point, perhaps post a few links, etc.

The funny thing is, I can't do it. I can't argue with Scotty, it just doesn't feel right. I know its absolutely ridiculous that I should not want to disagree with you because of your picture, but there it is. Clearly Star Trek has had waaaay too much of an influence on me. I wish I were kidding.

Hi Roger,

Although the book I reported on in my last thread had an alternative, I believe in black holes. I called them hypothetical because I don't believe they have been proven. I always had severe doubt about getting to another universe by going into one. I appreciate you not arguing. I don't think I could take it after being trapped in a transporter for 78 years.

I miss the T.V. shows where alcoholism was considered a quaint character trait. That's right McCoy, it may be a picture of Scotty, but I'm talking about you.
