REACHing Too Far?

Posted May 21, 2008 8:40 AM

The EU's historic Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulations begin in earnest this month with the kickoff of the preregistration period. The new regulations will impact industries from aerospace and automotive to paints and textiles. Some say the sweeping legislation has gone too far, that it is too complex, too burdensome and ultimately will drive companies out of the European market.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Textile Manufacturing & Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Textile Manufacturing & Technology today.

The cynic in me says: that is the ultimate reason for REACH: protectionism.

The realist says: the requirements are the same for manufacturers within the EU too.

Having worked in the testing industry for 5 years, its about time that something like reach came along. I am personally sick and tired of companies being able to produce what they want and ignore the consequences. There are countless cases of importers being saddled with poor products from overseas and haveing little or no recourse open to them, mandatory testing is the answer. For a sideways look, see what has happened to mattel, they didn't test and it has come back to haunt them!
