HVAC Energy Efficiency: Big Talk or Real Walk

Posted June 09, 2008 8:25 AM

Siemens and other HVAC companies surveyed HVAC designers and contractors for their reaction to the current energy crunch. They asked what HVAC companies did to make their operations run more efficiently. One General Contracting shop in upstate New York says: we burn through the energy by keeping the lights on all day, along with the computers, fax machines, copiers, etc. We run the AC in the afternoons during the cool months when the sun shines through the glass walls. If you're like me, you're too busy doing business to tend your personal energy issues. In the HVAC business, shouldn't we practice what we preach?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from HVAC, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to HVAC today.

This is such an outrageous answer as to be a TIC (Tongue In Cheek) reply to the original inquiry. Makes absolutley no sense otherwise.

Yes sir it.. Kind of conflicting there apparently. I don't Know! But any way getting back to issue of energy handling operations. In my modest opinion it should be a mix of the hi-tech and manpower into the formula to make it work real good. 'BMS' (Building Management Systems) work fabuluos when humans are in harmony first. Energy comprises a whole bunch of ingredients to make it happen. See to make a long story short by experiences I personally went trough out the woods back and forward few years ago working for some 'properties management' co. and things wasn't in much of the harmony over there never. Anyway sometimes in an attempt to diving deep to the bottom line few facts may be left behind or neglected or wrongfully done otherwise. One of those wrongfully doing things may be trying to operate a building any size with what they call 'One Man Operation'. or the manager at the office of course, a chief engineer at another office and one guy running around the services calls and PM's all over the place like a chicken without head. Plus in top of that when a vendors shows up that's another call for the 'Chicken Without Head Guy'. So trying attempt running a building this way will not going to make much sense no matter how much automation there are in place.

The bottom line may not be technically speaking being achieved under such conditions never. Manpower touch should be a main link not to neglected.

Well in the course of doing business if you were able to save $50.00 a day on the Electric Bill and maybe $20.00 a day from conserving water then would it be worth it.

One area to look at for really easy and quick savings are machine that are not used a lot but remain plugged in. Most equipment since the 1980's has an INSTANT ON feature built in. This uses very small amounts of engery but if you have a lot of these macines all over you buinsses then your experiencing the VAMPIRE effect the power companys talk about. Like portable phone chargers. I now try and but equipment without that instant on feature and keep many unpluged.

I also consolidated areas with printers in one area. Only a few get a printer right there by the desk. I noticed a big saving on paper too. Seems less is being printed because of the walk to retreive the document.

Gosh, I think we should. Imagine the scenarios for a tech that is send to a site to tear it out an industrial chiller apart on his own and put it back together on it's own. How that would sound ? Does that will be logical to anyone ? Or, safe from the standpoint ? Well, no to me at least yet. However that's was one of the job requirements in order to get the foot in. I don't Know! Probably Bottom Line Issue?

The other day I went to an interview for a technical opening in the region and that was one of the requirements during the ending of the conversation within the CO. engineers so as you may imagine unfortunatly I didn't agree neither. To me that requirement didn't make much sense neither. Why I should be tearing down an industrial chiller unit by myself after all ? Does that will sound practical to any of you ?

So, the whole good technological gadgets do sounds great but as I mentioned in others similar postings the manpower have to be part of the formula it is going to work smooth, absolutly but I guess the bottom line are still a huge obstacle to 'Make it Happen' deal. So I'd had much luck and got refused in the spot, end of story.

Anyway will be good to know if such formula may be improve some how so the whole circus came to a nice ending then. I'm keep telling ya' is a --No Win Situation Murphy Law Scenario-- out there. No Joke...Barbecue Day!

Is All Good,

MC
