White Patches Found in Mars Trench Are Ice, Scientists Say

Posted June 20, 2008 9:48 AM

From NYT > Science:

Now, scientists will be able to tackle the main question they hope to answer: Did the ice ever melt and turn Mars into a habitable place? In a photograph released Thursday evening of a trench that the Phoenix Mars lander has dug into the Martian soil, some white patches that were seen earlier in the week have shrunk, and eight small chunks have disappeared. Until now, scientists were not sure if the white material was ice or some kind of salt. When exposed to air, water ice can change into water vapor, a process known as sublimation. Salt, on the other hand, is not capable of such a vanishing act. "It must be ice," said Dr. Peter H. Smith of the University of Arizona, the mission's principal investigator. "The whole science team thinks this. I think we feel this is definite proof that these are little chunks of icy material."

Presumably there is sufficient supporting data not reported on in this artcle to confirm this is not some other material capable of sublimation, such as CO2. With that as a given, the analysis of the impurities in the ice/water should indeed be exciting news!

Indeed this would be interesting news. However, I remember back in grad school long ago while working on some thermal conductance data, I received a letter from an astrophysicist requesting information on CO2 thermal conductance. He stated that they were certain that the Martian atmosphere was primarily CO2. Is that still the prevailing theory?

yes, 95% CO2

Hello bhankiii

Evidently what is needed to "kickstart" the Mars "reformation", is for millions of trees to be planted there, along with fungi, microbes, and complex organisms, to make a proper complete ecosystem.

Once the Oxygen level increases, it'll be easier breathing, for the likes of our genus.

Kind Regards....

Sparky - "average daily temperature is about -70 F" ...that's not exactly balmy weather by anyone's standards, and even if the trees made it through that, I doubt I'd want to. How about you?

Don't worry - the radiation will kill you before the cold will. Step one for terraforming is to get that magnetic field cranked back up.

Hello EnviroMan

The job will be easy, because I had not forgotten about the dangers of Solar radiation.

After all, there are plenty of "Over-Unity Free Energy" folks around, who have achieved the apparently impossible, and love to tell us that they have achieved it.

So...send them off to Mars, with their Motors, Generators, and plenty of coils of copper wire and some soft iron rods, along with some space suits and airtight tents, plus six months supply of food and water.

It'll be only the time of a month or two, and they will have a proper magnetic field around Mars.

Then the next month or so, the ecosystem can be sorted out.

Have your next Christmas Holiday on Mars.

Kind Regards....

Phoenix's landing site is too warm for dry ice. The average daily temperature is about -70 F while dry ice requires temperatures lower than about -109 F. ergo - water

Of course there is still water on Mars.

Kind Regards....
