Google Launches New Space Race to the Moon

Posted June 20, 2008 10:50 AM

From CNN.com - Technology:

When Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the moon, he uttered unforgettable words. But the next visitor to roam the lunar landscape may send back e-mail instead. Welcome to a new kind of space race, where the earthly guest will be a machine and the goal is as much exploration as seeking out new business ventures. The quest is part of the Google Lunar X Prize, which will put $20 million into the hands of the first privately funded team that can land a rover on the moon, have it travel on the surface for 500 meters or more, send back data, photos and video, and do it all by December 31, 2012. The prize drops to $15 million after that date and goes away altogether after 2014. One of the main requirements is to have as little government involvement in the project as possible. "We believe that space should be open to anyone and everyone, especially those people who want to go," said Becky Ramsey, the X Prize Foundation's director of communications for space projects. "The government has accomplished amazing things ... but we think that we can do it less expensively."

Well, yes, and the pictures might really be from the Moon, too, unlike some earlier faked-up ones.

Kind Regards....

You're insinuating that the moon landing was a hoax!!?! Oh man Don't even joke about that. Calling the lunar landings a fake is like slapping tens of thousands of engineers, laborers, pilots, scientists, and astronauts in the face. It's kinda ridiculous that people can't believe that humans are capable of doing incredible things on their own. Discrediting the Apollo program is like pissing on the bodies of Gus Grissom, Rodger Chaffee, Ed White, and others who died for the ambitious, yet attainable, goal. Visit this website if you want logical arguments and proofs that we did indeed land on the moon: http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/tv/foxapollo.html There is a good book you should read about the astronauts in the Gemini and Apollo programs: In the Shadow of the Moon by French and Burgess. I can't believe that you, an engineer, of all people would say something like that!

I have seen programs that tried to prove that the pics from the moon were faked... they went out to the desert, set up lights, waited for the sun to go down and started shooting. I did not buy it. Still don't...granted I was, hmmmmmmmmm a couple of months old when Neil Armstrong took his first steps in the surface of the moon. We have a site given by Vermillion on the pro side, as well as, and a book (which I am sure there are numerous for both sides). What is your reference?

Cheers

As one who worked for NASA during that period and supported many of the Apollo programs, I can assure you it actually took place. My one regret was that I was on vacation in sunny Southeast Asia when Neil walked on the moon and I missed the party at Langley Research Center.

But then, you'd have to believe I'm not a part of that grand conspiracy!

I will continue to broadcast this message as long as the checks continue to arrive.

This is actually six months old. They haven't publicized it much, for some reason.
