Men in Floods

Posted July 10, 2008 12:00 AM by Sharkles

Last week, I was in a restaurant talking with some people who had recently moved to New York's capital region from Missouri. Their reason for moving here was that their apartment had been flooded. The discussion soon turned to the fact that many people in the East might not realize that flooding occurs in the West. In reality however, the past couple of months have seen extreme flooding in the Midwestern United States that killed at least twelve people.

Are there gender differences in how people respond to flooding? Nine of the twelve people killed were men, which turns out to be a typical ratio for storms. The University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public Health has conducted a survey of U.S thunderstorm deaths from 1994 to 2000. Their results show that men are more than twice as likely to die in storm-related deaths as women. The study looked at 1,442 deaths, where 70% were men.

During a storm, most deaths occur during flash floods or lightening strikes. According to Time magazine, men are more likely to work outside and take more dangerous risks.

The human brain is not very good as estimating depth of water and strength of its current. The brain has an even harder time calculating the risk of normal operations, such as driving a vehicle. According to the United States Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), 6 inches (15 cm) of water is enough to reach the bottom of your car and cause stalling or damage. Additionally, a foot of water is enough to float a car, and two feet can carry away cars, trucks, and SUVs. Driving and walking are also dangerous as flash flooding could occur anytime. Eight of the twelve reported deaths occurred while the person was attempting to drive – only two of these deaths were women.

Today's weather is increasingly unpredictable. Floods are common in many places, and becoming more so in others. Survival doesn't have to be all about luck. Taking precautions in the event of a flood is crucial. Here a few tips from the Web:

- Always try to keep to higher ground.

- Don't try to drive. (See explanation above!)

- If you have to walk, try to walk where the current is not moving. Even in shallow water currents can be dangerous and cause you to fall.

- Don't fight the current. If you have to swim, do it on your back with your feet forward and up to keep from hitting debris or getting pulled down by the current.

Be careful out there!

More men die than women because they are risk takers, impulsive and trying to 'protect' their family propery etc. Or just messing about in the flood water and underestimating it's power / over estimating theirs.
Maybe the wife has said... 'go out and fix that' too .

Just looking at that sign post, about 9-10 foot off the ground probably.

I met several "Bubba Types" who would tell themselves:

"If I just get this thing going fast enough, bet I can slide right accross that deep spot"

Speaking of "crack", as you mention in your signature, does it look to anyone else as though these two might have been malnourished even before the flood?

Some guys just enjoy doing stupid things on, in, or under water. Before it was outlawed, a popular sport among a handful of inebriated males was to try to ride a snowmobile across a stretch of open water (yup, liquid type) to see if they could make it to the other side (whooopie!). A few years ago I saw a newspaper article about a guy, whose snow machine quit before reaching the other side. He wasn't wearing a life jacket... couldn't swim... drowned... once again proving Darwin's Theory.

Never heard of a female trying this.

Hi Skeeter,

Last year on one of our TV programs (Top Gear) they had a contest to see if they could drive a 4 x 4 vehicle equiped with large dia, really deep tread tyres over water at speed!

Let me tell you that they did, they actually crossed a 240 yards wide lake here in England at incredible speed! It seems that high speed was the answer.

It seems that high speed was the answer.

Also a big TV budget and tons of safety backup

Outlawed? Really? Maybe while drunk. You can go to the Speed Channel and watch snowmobiles racing on water.

Not only that, a high performance dirt bike with sand paddle tires (and a light rider, not my 220 lbs (100 kilos) of mass) can cross open water. YouTube it and I'm sure you'll see plenty. (Can't access YouTube here at work. Netnannies blocked)

OMG you're from Albany? That explains a lot!

Now we can see what people thing about Albany by if they interpret this as a positive or a negative comment....

Last year (or the year before) Binghamton went under a lot of water too. I helped dig out Wilkes-Barre after Agnes back in '72. Nasty stuff.

But the bottom line here is to NEVER try to drive over a bridge covered with water - especially moving water. A lot of guys will question this and think they can make it. Most women I've talked to accept it at face value and will turn around.

But yeah, the owner's manual for my truck says it's OK to ford 24" of water. But that doesn't make it smart!

Don't assume the water levels around lakes, rivers, canals, etc are constant. There are many instances where the NYS folks control water intake/outlet for flood control in areas far removed demed more important, resulting in localized flooding.

Also, I remember the "father's day flo0d" of ~1974 in Southern Tier NYS that only flooded many creeks and small streams (sudden rain in sodden areas) rather than rivers per se.

"It never got that high before" doesn't cut it.

ca1ic0cat - I grew up in Ithaca and almost every spring the west side was cut off from the rest of the city until they did some extensive work to prevent it. Floods are no fun at all.

Yes you are so right, I can only apologise for this unforgivable lapse in the usually high standard of humour in my posts. I would ask the court to consider the mitigating circumstances that I've been working hard this week (for a change), I can only throw myself on the mercy of the court and promise that I shall try to more amusing in the rest of this thread.

You had to go and do it, didn't you EnviroMan? Threw me even further off the track of productive work than this topic already had... and, after falling into a YouTube clip about some cowboy-hatted WWF steroid stud, I found only this as an ersatz substitute for the original Village People: (but you deserve it)

Since I was told to report to work one time during a 100 year flood in Tucson, there might be a little more to it than just stupidity and machoism. But probably not by much.

My little Toyota Starlet did not like flying/skim-boarding through the "not so dry" washes (the highways and interstate were damaged), but it and I made it there safely.

Shortly thereafter I got a different job, and they are now defunct, so I outlived the silly sots.
