Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Calling All Canadian Car Lovers: AMO 2008

Posted July 14, 2008 12:01 AM by dstrohl

While you Yanks were eating bratwurst and watching fireworks over the Fourth of July weekend, I was up in Kingston, Ontario, for an equally patriotic event, but with a twist: The American Motors Owners Association for the second time in its history held its annual convention in Canada, which made for much clashing of accents and currencies. Definitely not the largest AMO meet, but anytime the meet moves eastward, attendance drops. Still, some neat cars showed up, including an abundance of station wagons.

Seeing all those reminds me of why American Motors went under. They built crap.

Are you simply showing an uninformed bias, or do you actually have evidence to back up your claim?

Right on, dan. The Guest has a right to his or her opinion, of course, but let's have an evidence-based debate. I'll try to get things started by posting an excerpt from the AMC page on Wikipedia.

"1985 was a turning point for the company as the market moved away from AMC's small models. With fuel relatively cheap again, buyers turned to larger more powerful automobiles and AMC was unprepared for this development."

There's more to the story, of course, but if the author's thesis is correct, then it's ironic that cheap gasoline sank an American automaker. Heck, the word from Detroit this morning is that GM is about to scuttle more its less fuel-efficient vehicles.

"Heck, the word from Detroit this morning is that GM is about to scuttle more its less fuel-efficient vehicles." Woohoo! About time they feel the pinch after doing things like scuttling the EV1...I hope they get nailed hard enough to make actually producing the Volt their only option for survival.

Ah, yes, catering to the whims of the American auto-buying public! Hasn't ever been easy, and sometimes it's downright impossible!
