Do Flat Screens Fan Global Warming?

Posted July 17, 2008 8:08 AM

You love those flat screen HDTVs right? University researchers have shown that nitrogen trifluoride, a gas used in manufacturing flat screen TVs, is detrimental to our planet. It has the potential for a greater impact on global warming than coal-fired power stations. The unregulated gas is more potent than other key greenhouse gases. How quickly will industry move to find an alternative to manufacturing flat screen TVs? Who should regulate? Being aware of the negative effects, would you still purchase a flat screen TV?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Electronic Product Design, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Electronic Product Design today.

Coincidentally, I have an LCD flat screen TV due to be installed in my lounge later today.

Of course, if I had known about the news prior to ordering the TV, I might have reconsidered. But then, what are the options? Do they still make vacuum tube TV's any more and would these be any less harmful in the manufacturing process?

This blog will only make me feel guilty whilst alternatively flicking between the Open Golf and test cricket this weekend.........but hey! My TV must have been manufactured before the research paper was published so I can do nothing about the impact already felt (except the guilt).

I know that my response sounds frivolous and that I am expecting to be lambasted by the eco warriers, but we do all we reasonably can in our household to avoid waste and segregate recyclable materials etc. And we are on a two weeks refuse collection cycle......

Hi HydroScot,

Why feel guily? I don't because I have only found out today as you have!

Anyway, up there your electricity is more than likely produced by hydro power, so that probably negates the effect!

Spencer.

Hi Scapolie.

Yeah, maybe guilty is the wrong word; awareness certainly and maybe somewhat confused about the contradictory information banded about regarding climate change.

But just as well I bought mine now as I'm sure the Brown / Darling dastadly duo will use the report as an excuse to laden more tax on us. They must be rubbing their hands together just now.......the whole TV viewing nation needs to change over to digital by 2012 (?). What am I saying???......they will be bound to back date the tax to 1950!

"In 2008, about three-quarters of the chemical is now used to manufacture computer microchips; the rest is used to make LCD panels." Wikipedia

Only 25% going towards LCD panel production should ease your guilt. Now everyone can feel guilty over their computer components.

I think the more urgent news to get out to the population is that Earth has been invaded, yes that's right INVADED! The little "green" men have arrived to tell us how bad, uncaring and greedy we all are. Many of their leaders exhibit a trait that they believe will keep the "martian" masses very green... envy. No one can have more than the next is their invasion cry. Redistribution is the mechanism to accomplish this grand goal, making sure that much of the "green stuff" ends up in their own space suit pockets. The leading little "green" men have been studying us for quite some time now and they have learned the secret of control... Fear and his companion Guilt.

"applications involving NF3 routinely break it down as it is used" per the wikipedia.

The global warming potential is therefore only imaginary.
