CR4 - The Engineer's Place for News and Discussion®

Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

The 100 Ugliest Cars of All Time

Posted September 05, 2008 12:01 AM by dstrohl

Turns out the Telegraph has launched a 20-car-a-day countdown of the 100 ugliest cars of all time. How ugly, you say? The Tribeca weighs in at 99, which means by the time they hit the seventies, you're going to want to put a tarp over your monitor.

The car pictured at left is a 1989 Hyundai Pony. No redeeming features whatsoever.

I wonder where the AMC Pacer ends up?

I believe it's in the top 5. That was one ugly vehicle!

Number 6. However it was a British poll, they probably didn't know better!

The AMC Pacer was so damned ugly it had to sneak up behind and hogtie the pump first before it could get any gas - and then only on moonless nights.

Someone just doesn't get it...

The Fiat Multipla is MEANT to be ugly... <slaps furry head with paw>

They could have just said anything with a Chrysler badge... there is that one that is trying to look like a Bently but looks like a breeze-block and says
'I'm an odious cheapskate wannabe who can't afford a Bently' (the Chrysler 300?)

"...anything with a Chrysler badge..."

Testify brother!

Regarding all the current Chrysler designs, I am having difficulty deciding which is the most disturbing:

1. Someone designed them that way--on purpose.

2. Someone else said "Yeah, that's great. Let's put it into production" and was probably sober at the time.

3. People are actually buying the butt-ugly things--on purpose.

Them's some butt-ugly automobiles, all right! They left out a couple of my personal..."favorites"...but captured some I'd never seen before (and man, was I glad of that!). Proof positive there's no accounting for taste. What bothers me the most, is that not a one of them was ever produced without some guy in a 3-piece Italian silk-blend suit and with a seven-figure income saying "Looks good to me.". Now, that's truly scary!

Just about any Saab could be in that list.

My wife's cousin had a Citroen 2CV (#56). It says it is great in form and function. I had to laugh as we were riding about in the Welsh hills near Bargoed and had to get out and push it up the hill every time.

I think we have to narrow our definition and distinguish between ugly and unattractive. The 2CV is an ugly car, but has such quirky characteristics as to make it stylish. The Mini and that gloriously ugly US GMC pickup are examples of cars with repugnance but character.

My ha'pence worth goes to British Leyland (nee Austin / Morris / MG etc) who consistently produced heart-stoppingly vomitous designs, allied to pitiful engines, porridge-ridden gearboxes, zero quality control and appalling build quality. Handily, most begin with 'M':

Mini Clubman (take a car with character, then remove it)

Maxi (with the asthmatic over-square engine)

Allegro (with the square steering wheel)

Maestro (the Pope-mobile)

Montego

Princess

Marina

I can't go on; the soul just isn't strong enough.

Do you have no style?

The Mini and the Mini Clubman are lovely little cars! (I'm talking about the original ones not the current knock-offs produced by BMW)

They have class, style, character and carisma and are definatly attractive cars!

But I do agree with you about the others!

I always thought the Princess was quite a good wedge shape...dunno how it drove...(before my time) . If you want an ugly mini..maybe the Riley Elf?

(Didn't Roddy Lewellyn once have a job putting Big Ends in Princesses? )

It's tempting here to make some snide comment about your (born-as) Princesses already having "big ends", but I'm not the wild colonial boy to make it, nosirree!

OK, here's one I didn't see previously mentioned that is BOTH ugly and unattractive - Volkswagen's "Thing" (in U.K. called "Trekker") from the mid-'70's! With the top down it was a "thing" to behold, alright...

Re: The 100 Ugliest Cars of All Time

All of the leyland cars listed were butt ugly! They weren't the only ones, Jaguar replaced the e type with the XJS, seriously down grading! Triumph replaced the TR6 with the cheese shaped TR7. In a more modern era, both mitsubishi and subaru have launched some howlers with Evo and imprezza designs that look as bland as a Toyota corolla!

I think one important thing to remember is that British Leyland weren't just responsible for making very poor cars, they were the engineering company tasked with making the gas turbine engines for the APT, and these were so bad that the worlds most advanced train was cancelled! A triumph of using a crap british engineering company. It seems odd that once Made in England meant quality, thanks to the 1970s, it quickly meant crap!

Let's not get down on England. The seventies can, in general for most of the worlds auto manufacturers, be called the era of garbage, or 'crap' as you like to say. American muscle cars gave way to wimp cars that were total junk with plastic parts and short life spans, the Yugo was born etc etc etc. That was how Japan, who had been known as the purveyors of junk after WWII became known as quality manufacturers. They were the only ones in the world trying to go the opposite direction. Consequently, they snatched up the lion share of the automobile market for a long time and are still known for quality.

Back to the topic at hand.

Ugly cars do not mean old. As soon as we thankfully get rid of a few ugly cars, there are unfortunately a dozen new ones ready and willing to take their place and for some unearthly reason, people are too eager to buy them. Here's some new ones that I didn't have to break a sweat trying to remember; Aztec, Element, HHR and Xion. Talk about four screaming butt ugly cars that, unfortunately for the artistic, are selling like hotcakes and hurting our eyes and brains everywhere we go. Of course, if you want to talk older, we must include the Pacer, almost anything made by American motors or Harvester International (yes, they made more than tractors) and who can forget Citroen?

In my opinion the UK editors were very kind to AMC. This company offered some of the ugliest vehicles of all time and to only get 2 on the list does not serve them justice.

Nash Metropolitan

Rambler Sedan

AMX

Gremlin

Hornet

Pacer

Matador Barcelona

Concord

Hudson Wasp

Rambler Marlin

The company was in business from 1954 to 1987.

These may be the ugliest cars of all time.

There is much merit in what you say. About as much as there was tastelessnesss in their design department. And somebody actually approved each and every one...

With ugly cars of today we cannot forgot BMW's especially the 5 series!

One of the cases of an updated car being uglier than its predessors!

More proof - that just because you have lots of dollars, does not mean you have any sense... ($≠¢)

Too bad they missed the Plymouth Belvedere, such as this one that Tulsa buried in a time capsule in 1957:

This is what it looked like when they dug it up for their centennial celebration:

A couple of ones on the list reminded me of the Chevrolet Corvair:
