How Important is Energy Efficiency?

Posted September 15, 2008 8:21 AM

Everyone seems to be concentrating more than ever on energy efficiency in applications that range from embedded electronics to industrial computers to power plants. But to know how efficient a device or process is requires a way to accurately measure it. How important is energy efficiency to your company's products, services, or operations? What methods are employed to measure it?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Solutions for Industrial Computing, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Solutions for Industrial Computing today.

Efficency is very important in any industry!

To put it crudely, if a vehicle travels 10mpg and another similar vehicle travels 20mpg then the second vehicle is the more efficient! anything that costs less to do or proccess means that it is more efficient than another that costs more.

That means that you can save more on costs and the customer pays less, thus you will get more sales!

Efficiency reduces operating costs and saves money, which is important with rising energy prices. However the efficiency has to be balanced against overall cost of manufacture. You may be able to build an electric mixer that uses half as much electric power but costs ten times as much to make. The savings on the cost of the electricity might require the mixer to last over 50 years to recoup the added cost of production in savings on electrical costs. A cost-effective balance has to be the main consideration.
