Sharon Long appointed as Obama's Science Advisor: Barack Obama has established a small but well-regarded inner circle of science advisors that includes Sharon Long a bacterial symbiosis researcher.

Top accolade for Rhodes scientist: University research professor who is championing ground-breaking research into a new cancer diagnosis and treatment methodology has received a prestigious award after being nominated one of 10 Women of Excellence in South Africa.

Esther Batton, a research chemist for Rohm and Haas Co. for 34 years passes away: For 13 years, she coordinated the Science Bowl run by the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers, which was open to students from seventh to 12th grades in the Philadelphia area.

Young engineer gets UB honor as Distinguished Professor of Year: Professor Abhilasha Tibrewal has her Master of Science degrees in computer science and in education. She has another Master's in home science (textiles and clothing) and her Bachelor's in the same field. Tibrewal specializes in programming, engineering education and algorithms, and she's done basic research in those areas.

Women in Technology Announces the Winners of the Women of the Year in Technology: Women in Technology (WIT) announced on Sept. 18 the winners for the ninth annual Women of the Year in Technology Awards presented by Grant Thornton. The 2008 awards recognize and celebrate the winners as "WOMEN OF IMPACT" for their accomplishments as leaders in business, as visionaries of technology, and as women who make a difference in our communities.

Women Scientist win MacArthur "Genius" Fellowships: The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation just named the recipients of the 2008 MacArthur Fellows. Twenty-five winners of the so-called "genius" fellowship will receive $500,000 with no strings attached over the next five years.

DCU Engineering student awarded Google Europe Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship: Congratulations to Patricia Moore (Centre for Image Processing and Analysis [CIPA] www.cipa.dcu.ie ) on being awarded a Google Europe Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship 2008. Patricia was one of 20 talented young women selected from 295 students in 157 different universities across 31 European countries who applied for the 2008 award.

A new era dawns at DuPont Co.: The DuPont Co. tapped Ellen J. Kullman as its next chief executive Tuesday, giving the company its first woman at the top spot in its 206-year history and a new leader to push forward an institution reshaped under Charles O. Holliday Jr.

NJVC Announces Jill Bruning as Chief Operating Officer: NJVC, one of the largest information technology solutions providers supporting the United States Department of Defense (DoD), has announced Jill Bruning as chief operating officer.
