How Do You Regain High-tech Leadership?

Posted November 12, 2008 8:44 AM

Strengthening the nation's technical know-how got short shrift in the presidential election campaign, as candidates focused on ways to shore up a sagging economy and fix the financial crisis. Yet statistics shows that high-tech imports to the U.S. are outstripping exports by some $60 billion this year. Which path is best for bolstering technology leadership — tax cuts and less regulation for business, or more direct federal spending on basic research and science and engineering education?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Quality Control, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Quality Control today.

This is a biased question. Those are not the only choices and are not either/or.

The US is currently the undisputed leader in biotechnology. We lag in a few areas, especially those involving stem cells, but over-all we are number one. That may indeed be the only broad area where we still are the leader. If we take that as the area to concentrate on, we obviously need:

lots of money for basic research;

improved education;

money for incubator sites;

an end to religious meddling in science;

tax cuts and even credits for start-up companies in these fields;

very, very strict regulation by a revitalized FDA;

strong financial oversight from somebody like NIH

Point taken. That was the thrust of the question, but it implies a oneupsmanship that no longer exists. I do think we are currently in the lead, but the hunt (France, Korea, Japan, UK, Germany, et al) are only about two paces back. Even with that, the whole thing is going global so fast, the idea of a national lead might be archaic. Pittsburgh has a world class medical center and, largely because of that, we have at least four Hindu Temples, two Mosques, several Korean churches, and (at last!) some decent restaurants. And, the medical center announced yesterday that it was looking to build 100 cancer centers throughout the world in the next two decades. We OFs are still chauvinistic, but I think that's going the way of the dodo bird? Perhaps we need a Churchill to tell us we're not king of the hill? Or, that there's not even a hill anymore?

Hello TVP45:

You make some very pertinent remarks my friend! Good Post. The question is biased. But when asking something specific, that is often the case?

Take care..........

There is absolutely no way US can reclaims its lost technology leadership unless, unimaginative restrictions on immigration of highly talented individuals, is immediately improved upon. Current suffocating policies have only encouraged emigration of talent, spelling doom to American technology leadership in a flat world. "Tax cuts and less regulation for business, or more direct federal spending on basic research and science and engineering education" are at best only secondary solutions.

How about this approach? We stop giving all of our technolgy to other countries by stop building factories in their countries, and stop teaching them our technolgy to make things including high tech things? Many compainies are doing this just to sell a cheaper product. We could even pass laws to stop it.

That horse is out of the barn. I do some part-time work for a company where Asian (I'm working hard not to identify anybody) engineers come in to teach American engineers how to build things.

Re: How Do You Regain High-tech Leadership?

Hello ?

I do not think the US or any other so called Western Wealthy Country will ever get back to the top. If that is the correct phrase to use?

As long as another Country can build it for less, that item simply cannot be made in the US or elsewhere. It is simply not good economics.

It so happens that India and Chine in particular, have invested and are investing very much more to 'Educate' Their people and, that is why these Countries, are now not just the assembly nations for other Countries goods. They are becoming and are designing things, using the now ubiquitous computer, which can design some things so much quicker than the old way, where designers would need a couple of years lead time. Now that time is down to months or less.

The society structure in India and China seems to be much more diverse than most Western Countries, this allows for several strata, of, 'thinkers', designers, workers, and endless 'outwork' to be given to individuals who need it to try and get 'Educated' themselves, and just to feed their Families.

So the 'need' to export their Countries goods is not needed. It has always been that there is more profit in selling fully complete goods, than in selling the 'parts'.

China and India are reaching the situation where, they can supply anything to any Country, at a cheaper price.

Where the US was and is design led, those designs can no longer be made in the US. When China could buy what was once the ultimate industry giant of IBM, from there it seems to me, who was born and brought up in the UK, the only way is down a very slippery and bumpy hill indeed.

China, Asia, and India, not only make the cheapest products you can buy. They are now making the most expensive and 'exclusive' clothes and designer suite cases and bags, etc. Those items could still be made in the west but, the greed of the designers of these very expensive items, clothes and suite case etc has lead them to get these items made in Asia, China and India, but, still charge ridiculous prices. Even though the products can be made for perhaps 2%/10% the cost they were costing to make in the west. These Companies are making very much more profit. And to charge the same and often silly prices for those items in the western Countries, is criminal.

Re: How Do You Regain High-tech Leadership?

Hello krishnan.ng:

If your remark is aimed at me, I thank you.

All I did was say what everybody I know is thinking and secretly knows is true. It makes it no easier to accept, but, the fact that 'the East' 'Asia' Countries were always going to catch up with the Western Countries was obvious from say, the second World War. Exports is where the 'real' money is. But china and India in particular have a wealth of people, and even if they for whatever reason cannot export for a month, for instance, there is probably more than enough 'Domestic' markets to compensate.

I cannot recall the exact figures now, but they are hard to comprehend anyway. China has approximately, 60% more people than the rest on all the Countries combined. It is I feel, down to the numbers, the number of hands willing and able to do what is needed. China and India and I think South Korea should get a mention, innovate and produce things, items, including heavy Engineering like ships, and power plants, which are good quality, and things which people want. It has to be said that Asia in general, also produce some of the worst designed and made items available. Often gimmicky things. But, a million rubbish items at a dollar each is still worth a million dollars! And that can often keep the infrastructure 'ticking over' in a slump.

Sorry, I did not to start ranting again.

Thank you...........

babybear,

I wish I could flame you about how wrong you are and how you just don't know. But I can't. You're mostly right. A lot of us in the US are scared of that and just don't want to say it. China is starting to "eat our lunch" and India is waiting in line.

But, perhaps we can all work together and share leadership. Maybe a technology G20?

Hello TVP45:

You have your 'thinking head' on tonight!

I think there has to be enough to go round to whoever makes it?

The washing will all come out clean well, someday, though it will take a while as there has been so much damage done. Perhaps there should have been better monitoring? You have to wonder.

Thanks for the post...........

Take care........

Re: How Do You Regain High-tech Leadership?

Hello TVP45:

I shall most likely be crucified for this but, hey, what's new?

I want to point out I AM NOT ANTI CHINA, INDIA, OR ANY OTHER COUNTRY!

It is our own companies who actively seek out ways to make very wealthy people, even wealthier which has led to a creeping, insidious sort of work given out to in particular India. And I am thinking 'call centres' here. I could perhaps accept it, (I have not got the choice mostly) if our companies and the Indian call centres were not actively trying to dupe people here in the West to think that they are 'just another call centre in a Town down the road'. Mostly only people with a good enough English speaking voice can work in these centres.

Now, if I buy something from a UK based mainland company, I want that company to have any help or office numbers IN THE UK!

The other point with ref' to China................Has anyone notices the increasing numbers of Chinese Companies who have English sounding names? Just something I have seen more of.

I'm old enough to remember when US companies used to set up little subsidiaries in countries like Korea, Italy, etc where they wanted to do business. They'd hire a local General Manager (with minimal duties) and give the sub a nice local name. I guess it's only fair that Asian countries do that to us now? We gotta be big boys now - the world economy is flat and fast. If we can't cut it, perhaps they'll need greeters at the Osaka Wal-Mart.

Hello TVP45:

I know what you mean about say the UK setting up 'cover companies'. And almost always the origin of those companies could be found.

That is not always as easy when, and this is just an example: J A Tiffit. Completely made up. But, I have seen Chinese companies with no mention of the fact they are Chinese, until after you visit the web site. Just seems a little underhand to me.

I am soon going to bed.......

Tace care..............

The change is going to have to include a social change. Currently we have a low class mind set all over the country concentrated on greed and getting paid as much as possilbe for the least effort.

While greed has some postitive aspects the greatest effects are negative. Unless as the ninth level of hell from Dante where one is constantly biting at the other the citizens want to live in such a society. Then another way will have to be found.

Hello dadw5boys:

This is a bit I used tonight on another thread. I think it pretty much sums it up.

It is just a case of the rich and greedy, wanting to get even more rich and greedy, with no thought or admission of the consequences. Disgusting!

I have always worked hard. It does seem to me as well, that people just do not actually KNOW what a hard days work is?I know of a Family why has about seven kids. Well all but one is an adult now. Not one of the boys has ever had a regular 8-5 job. They work when they can't get money from anywhere else. They are all fit and well.

I got to 16 and went to work. ...............That was build into my psyche.

Now say over the last generation it has become the 'norm' not to work and in fact is seen as 'un-cool' to even admit you even thought about work. It makes me sick! If I was their Father I would kick them up the ar-e until they were at work, and full time work which earns respect.

Take care my friend...........
