Time to Load up on Statins?

Posted December 07, 2008 8:17 AM

A major new drug trial called Jupiter found that even people with low cholesterol could cut risk of stroke and heart attack in half by taking statins. The study, funded by AstraZeneca, claims that statins can reduce harmful inflammation in the body, as measured by levels of C-Reactive Protein (CRP). What's your reaction to such highly-publicized health news? Will you consult your doctor about taking statins — or wait for more clinical evidence?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Quality Control, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Quality Control today.

Hi

We have seen that statins may cause very severe side effects - that are in reality pronounced ordinary main effects,

we have seen one big player losing, but the otheres, their statins should be banned too, try to market - push into the unwilling "consumers" - more and more!

Controlling cholesterol is nonsense, it should concentrate on HDL, LDL and triglycerides (TG) . Try to bring your TG/HDL ratio somewhere near 1.5 to 2 and you will not need any more interventions of the above typethat are related to inflammation and heart attacks.

There is a simple natural way to adjust these bloodfats: good food of diverse type.

Very much vegetables and fruits. Tomato in any form not limited.

Sufficient oil from olive, avocado, sesame and nuts. (30% of energy intake!)

Meat and fish mixed with maximum 30% red meat, rest chicken, turkey ... (or rattlesnake) and fish. Low fat meat but high fat fish is allowed!

Carbohydrates reduced to maximum 30% of enrgy intake: potatoes and natural rice preferred, pasta and pizza not.

Sufficient water to drink (no high-sugar drinks!), minimum 1 to better 2 liter a day.

This is the cost effective and healthy way.

We are the "children" of a distant race (5 million years now) that lived at the shores of the big African lakes in the rift valley, adapting to seafood there, enabling our big brain and needing some food that is not easily derived from grass (wheat and rice) only.

RHABE's response is consistent with the advice I see being given by many nutritionists and licensed dietitians.

The only thing I might add to his recommendations is that, aside from the commonly known benefits, it has been shown that regular exercise reduces cholesterol levels.

I would also add that there are other ways to reduce systemic inflammation that do not have the potential for so many debilitating side effects.

Lets see, does AstraZeneca sell statins? These self serving "trials" could be a total scam, for all we know.

There's nothing to keep the drug purveyors from saying whatever they want and doctoring the results to support their own product. Pardon the pun. After all, drug companies pay doctors to push their products, so ethics are nonexistent in this field.

There is no oversight, just like the banking industry, so they do as they please and as long as they don't kill too many people continue to make billions off the dupes who believe them or are paid to believe them.
