Bailout, Handout, Good-bye Big Screen?

Posted December 12, 2008 8:33 AM

The powers-that-be (and soon will be) have finally admitted what we've been experiencing for months: we're in a world-wide recession. Globally, stock markets are tanking despite the promise of huge government-funded bailouts. Now many global automakers are holding their hands out for their share. Sure, the recession means that big-screen TVs are cheaper than ever. But will you buy that conference room video equipment or a big HDTV despite a recession?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Display Technologies, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Display Technologies today.

No I don't need a Big Screen TV, my tube still does fine. Not a Need, low even on the wants list.

My shop is full of tools, I'll make most of my gifts this year (much more personal). Recession? I'm in the black, no debt. Let the proverbial Jones Mortgage their life's work away on compounding interest rates. Long term thinking is not being lead astray from ones goals by charlatans and wants.

well said Brad.

last thing I need or want is a big screen.

More tools, you bet, a plasma cutter is very high on the list.

To address the intended point of this thread, I don't think many department managers are going to risk trying to justify limited use item purchases if their existing technology works. Why would one want to invite extra scrutiny during a time of cutbacks, making hard to justify requisitions can be very hazardous in times like these.
