If You Build Green, Will They Come?

Posted January 17, 2009 8:08 AM

Consumers are willing to pay more for "green" wireless gadgets. Analysts say this could be just what the industry needs to get an economic boost. Do you agree?

I generally refuse to buy anything labeled "Green", because it is generally a marketing scam. I do, however, appreciate manufacturers who give me sufficient information to judge for myself the appropriate use of materials and how much energy I am consuming to accomplish the goal at issue. Label it "Green", and I most likely will walk away...

CW,

I must say I concur completely with that premise.

Who says that consumers are willing to pay more for "green" commodities? Show me the data.

I find that statement and the premis that this is just what we need to pull the economy out of the weeds highly suspect.

'Green' has become such a buzzword that everyone has become very suspicious of any product claiming the fact. Sort of like 'organic' from a few years back, like the chickens came from mars or something if they were not labeled organic. It is all about tree huggers getting their way again and the marketing people just doing what they get paid for. Groups like Green Peace have recruited very large numbers of people who need to belong, as in it helps them feel significant, and they use these numbers to sway political decisions. Thus the huge 'green' movement. Since I am in the automotive community I have seen almost everything advertized as green. The term has become almost meaningless in a very short time, unfortunatly we are going to be hearing it for some time, or at least until the next imaginary crisis comes along.

Being a marketing guy, I am all for being a good steward and bringing the best products to market. But I am so sick of the greenie weenies. They take credit for processes that were already there or create products that are purely hype. I would like to know what "analysts" you are refering to. PS I will pay nothing more for a "green product" I only pay for products that give me a good return on my investment

The only green I care about is money. I am not a green freak, however, I am sick of buying things that are produced to self destruct within a short period of time with no way of fixing them. It seems as if most of our gadgets are designed and built like bic lighters, purchase, use for a relatively short period of time, throw away.......repeat

A lot of people (including Green Building Council in Australia) do not understand what is green. We are almost being forced to use air cooled air conditioning system (6000kW) instead of water cooled system. Their arguement is to save water in cooling tower. Air cooled system is less energy efficient especially in hot ambient. It has half the equipment life normally and one third in marine environment and has to be thrown away and replaced. Its efficiency drops as ambient temperature rises and eventually it trips and we have to evacuate the shopping centre in some regions.

More energy is used, more rubbish is produced(due to replacement), more water is used to generate more electricity. That's what the GBCA called "green". The only benefit is to create more jobs in manufacturing the equipment, installing them and transporting the rubbish to the dump.

Great GREEN idea my foot.

...Will They Come?

No, they won't!

Recession is yet to come and many people don't & won't have enough money.

What is a wireless gadget anyway, a radio? Everybody's got one already.

My friends if you're thinking great then you have to start thinking of something new that doesn't even exist yet!

Whatever we currently have is all f...and barely worth to worry about as most people will soon be struggling for just shear survival, as see it on TV right now, let alone worry about some "green" wireless gadgets to have.

Nope, I will not pay a penny more for most 'green' stuff. It is a marketing scam that does not have to be proven or be true. Actually, I get angry with most of the claims of being green or environmentally friendly, as I think it should mean; Zero impact to the environment or a benefit to the environment.

A good example of how twisted this whole 'green' movement has become is a home and garden tv show where the home owner decided to make his house 'green'. So he ripped up all his perfectly good hardwood flooring to install cheaply made 'green' bamboo flooring that was shipped thousands of miles...Don't get me going on this 'green' thing...

GA from me.

I never heard anyone being so straight forward and upfront about this whole Green bull....t that is neither friendly for the environment nor for the pocket.

Yeah, - 'Going Green' is a full on bloody scam to wheedle money out of people.

I believe 'Green' should be left for the salesmen as a catch phrase to capture their naive buyers (victims).
