Is the Recession Affecting Factory Control?

Posted February 21, 2009 8:43 AM

What real-world impact is the recession having on factory control? If you are involved, what are you seeing in your business segment? Decreased production quantities don't necessarily translate to fewer parameters to monitor or control. Perhaps job cuts increase the need for automation of industrial controls? Or are cuts in capital expenditures pushing things in the other direction?

As usual it's a tradeoff.

Economy of scale kicks in when the investment in machines offsets the human labor costs (however perceived by mgt.).

Instrumentation and Control technologies are growing at an exponential rate while us 'old farts' (who know what's really happenin) are dying off.

This is a very interesting question actually.

As a fellow, hard knocks engineer, what do you look for in a newhire?
