I Know what You did Last Summer?

Posted February 26, 2009 8:19 AM

Miniature cameras, RFID tags, now Google's Latitude. All these applications of relatively new technology have sound, practical, and harmless value, and all could potentially be misused to intrude on your privacy. One day after Latitude's release, privacy watchdogs sounded the alarm. Google defended its offering by saying it came with 'fine-grained privacy' controls. You control what is seen and by whom. So the big questions are: Is it enough? Is it safe? Are technologies like this an acceptable risk or a serious threat?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Networking & Communications, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Networking & Communications today.

The old fashioned notion of total privacy went out the window years ago. The eye in the sky sees all. In any case, if someone wants to know badly enough, they will pay an investigator to watch you. As in so many divorce cases.

Google Latitude just makes it available to everybody. I bet a rich person could order up a birds eye view of anyone they wanted to snoop on, and pay for it.(Correct if I'm wrong..?) We have the illusion of privacy only because we are not paying attention..

You can use Latitude to do security checks of your own home. Why not? Maybe violate the privacy of some crook breaking in. That's okay by me. I\m sorry it won't be available in Canada.

1984 has become true, true privacy has become a myth
