Can Wireless Spur the Economy?

Posted April 19, 2009 8:44 AM

Executives at the recent CTIA conference said the wireless market is thriving and its innovation flourishing, despite global economic troubles. They agreed that the wireless industry could play a significant role in the country's economic recovery. Their rationale: investment continues in building new infrastructure and customers are buying higher-end products. Do you think wireless can save the economy? Does the wireless industry wield that kind of power, or is this a pipe dream?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Wireless Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Wireless Technology today.

I would think twice about wireless technology. Who wants to use a communications system that eats up 50% of the bandwidth because of security and overhead and still have gaping holes hackers love to dig into. Good old hard wired ethernet runs at blazing speed compared to wireless, and only has about 2 % overhead including security which is much harder to breach.

Wireless is surprisingly investing and not (yet) experiencing a proportional down turn. Their fortunes depend on a short recession and a vigorous recovery. People facing a pinch and risk of loosing food and shelter do not have wireless at the top of their list.

Their infrastructure investments are capital intensive, so unless the financial issues are successfully addressed, they may face the same bust they ran into as the dot.com bubble burst. The potential long term is promising, but even an upside for their industry, which would be helpful, is in my opinion far from being enough to "save the economy".
