Who Needs a Plant Manager?

Posted April 24, 2009 8:15 AM

Compressed air systems designed to analyze plant floor data are coming. The idea is to continuously adjust air supply and demand — based on the data — to optimize performance and save energy. Will software do a better job at this than plant managers?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Pneumatics, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Pneumatics today.

will software actually think for themselves? and not programmed responses but abstract or analytical responses or a combination of the two to solve conditions

Will software be able to "Geri-Rig" a quick fix, till the needed part comes in or is replaced?

Will software work around unknown or never thought of before issues that come up a block out the system?

answer those first. and then you have the right to begin to ask the question; Will software do a better job at this than plant managers?

Only place I ever worked where Pneumatics were part of the permanent infrastructure was in an Aircraft Hangar.

I've used nail guns on building sites and have some ideas towards making them quieter, since loud machines bother me more and more.

Don't know about the plant floor where computer control of pressures and feeds would really make all that much difference, for typically the old tank pressure systems don't kick the compressor on till pressure is lowered.

Big demand, big pressure tank, and it is likely you will be all right.

As far as Tayoloristic efficiency reports per workstation, it would of course be possible to check on power usage, but would call for right well work station usage reporting dependent on metering I've not seen.

Might be the sort of thing to give the newly hired son-in-law as an exersize.

Take a look at this article in Hydraulics & Pneumatics magazine:
