Luxury Purchases: Cineplex or a Cub Cadet?

Posted June 05, 2009 11:02 AM

I'm not sure what a $100K salary buys today, but researchers say anything above that level is affluent. Well, even the affluent change their spending habits in a tight economy. A recent survey showed increased spending on TVs and lawn mowers. So how do you design to deliver the appliances they both need and are willing to buy? Do you plan those products that focus on the home? Or do you count on the affluent to continue to buy their electronic toys?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Appliance Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Appliance Technology today.

Not sure. If I made $100k a year( maybe someday. Soon I hope!) I would still cut my grass. I just like doing it! I would have a bigger mower but not the most expensive one. Just a better one with solid built reliability. (sadly probably foreign built) I love the old Cub Cadet line from a few decades ago. The modern series is cheaply built in comparison to to old ones.

But I am a hands on person so maybe I would design and build it myself too! 100K a year would give me some crazy financial resources to design with!

Any of you rich fellas want a custom built super mower? I'd love the challenge! No limit but your buget and our imaginations!

Don't know when these researchers made that call, but $100K ain't what it used to be. I think the size of your lawn (more than your net worth) will determine the ranking order for the amount of money you spend on your vegetation curtailment issues. Some people simply buy a goat or a sheep but it's not as optional living in a city.

As inflation has increased substantially we have found at home, that we are buying more what we need than what we think we need. As an example, have a look at your tool shed or your kitchen gadgets and ask yourself, how often you use everything, and what you simply bought because you thought it was a good purchase at the time....that wire cheese cutter (a sharp knife would cut the sandwich after as well)....or that paint stirrer attachment you can add to your drill (don't they all mix it in the store now so well that you can basically start painting once you open the can.)
