You'll Pay for Higher Standards

Posted June 10, 2009 7:34 AM

At a time when automakers are fighting for survival, the Obama Administration is tightening the screws on emissions and mileage standards. The aim: Impose a single national standard that will create a car and light truck fleet that is almost 40% cleaner and more fuel-efficient by 2016 than it is today, with an average of 35.5 miles per gallon. While environmentalists and even the automakers support the measure, the new standards are expected to add $1,300 to the cost of a new car. Are you willing to pay more for these gains in air quality and energy efficiency?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Quality Control, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Quality Control today.

My wife and I have 3 cars and a motorcycle ranging from 1993 to 2005, we owe no money on any of them and none of them get less than 35 miles per gallon and my MC gets 50. The cars that meet this standard are out there and they don't care, you can't make people care, you can only make the adhere through the use or implied use of force. All this will do is drive an even more significant wedge between the US and its representatives along with sound bites and typical party politics. One day there is the "cash for clunkers" program that will give you 4500 for gas guzzlers, now it is going to cost 1300 more to supposedly be more fuel efficient. Watching politics during the atrocious Bush Administration and now with the absolute junk the current administration is pushing reminds me of the MTV show "The Real World", where everyone is a drunk hooker or man-whore and the only time they take to stop screaming at each other is so they can crawl into bed and make out ( the PG version).

I am not going to pay more, I will simply continue to buy older cars, pay a small amount more on gas and use the significant savings to buy gold and silver. I have put 6000 miles on a car in year that gets 38 mpg with no maintenance other than an oil change that cost me $900 to purchase. it ain't much to look at but my ego can take that it isn't a cadillac escalade.

IMO, this measure has more to do with appeasing special interets groups and creating an acceptance of future protectionism laws that will hurt our manufacturing base further as well and hurt relations with foreign countries.

I was thinking about buying the single most fuel efficient car on the planet, it has even edged out the toyota camry in terms of sales, prepare to be wowed by the "Cozy Coupe"

we will never be able to satisfy the " environmentalist" way of thinking. no matter how clean we get cars or how good the mileage is, someone will have an ax to grind and will continue to use the auto business to offset their feelings of uselessness. the top of the scale is the latest scare tactics about CO2. i could not get my watch wound any tighter with a 4 foot cheater bar......

the truth will cost you..... the sarcsm is free
