Is Business School the Place to Teach Ethics?

Posted June 02, 2009 7:53 AM

Continuing corporate scandals revolving around the blind pursuit of maximum shareholder value; short-term gains over long-term interest of companies, communities, and nations; and personal enrichment have renewed society's focus on ethical behavior. This attention is particularly prominent in MBA programs populated by students who often have spent over $100,000 for a degree they hope will lead to a lucrative position. The question is: If they didn't have ethical awareness and moral fiber before they got there, will a semester of business ethics have much impact?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Networking & Communications, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Networking & Communications today.

As soon as the lawyers realize there is money to be taken in lawsuits against unethical people, a semester of awareness should start to have some effect.

But finding an ethical lawyer could be a problem. It seems to be a contradiction of terms.
