Toyota Demonstrates Brain Control of Wheelchair

Posted June 30, 2009 8:30 AM

From Slashdot:

An anonymous reader tips us that researchers at Toyota have developed a brain-machine interface system that allows for control of a wheelchair using thought. The system processes brain thought patterns (such as the thought of moving one's left foot) and can turn them into left, right, and forward movements of the wheelchair with a delay as short as one-eighth of a second.

They showed that on some telly program a while ago, can't remember what, may have been Top Gear or something. It looked cool, but was hard to control.

I'm still waiting for control of an automobile using thought.

I'm not afraid of heights, but when standing near the ledge of roofs, or floors, or at heights, I get the strange impulse to leap. the height acts like a crazy psychological magnet.

what if the patient sitting in one of these thought-controlled wheelchairs gets such crazy thoughts? it's scary thinking of the many other possibilities. the thing could be a killer rather than a helper.
