Do You Trust Your Supplements?

Posted July 11, 2009 7:57 AM

Vitamin and herbal supplements have become a very big business — sales of $23 billion annually in the U.S. alone. Yet widely circulated news reports indicate that one-quarter of supplements tested by an independent lab over the past decade have had some sort of problem, such as contaminants, contents not listed on labels, or ingredients that exceeded safe limits. Do you support increased funding and staff so that the Food and Drug Administration can step up inspections and other quality control measures for this sector of the health market?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Quality Control, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Quality Control today.

The FDA is not the organization to do quality control, as they simply cannot be trusted. They have become the icon of corruption in the world, even worse than the greedy financial sector, as Wallstreet was never charged with improving and maintaining public health. The FDA kills more people per year than any other organization on the planet. so NO.

Agreed, and the FDA can still kill by doing nothing.

Right, like there aren't ample examples of "approved drugs" that have killed or debilitated thousands over the years sometimes the effects only becoming known decades down the road. Thanks FDA for taking such good care of us. Couple that with the fact that one of the reason drugs cost so much is the delays and trials that are required by the FDA.

Life is dangerous. You have to pay attention and fend for yourself. The "experts" really aren't. It's just other humans, fallible as any of us making their best guess.

DEFINITELY NOT!

As stated above, the FDA can not fulfill its current mission let alone be burdened with the additional oversight responsibilities of supplements.

There are plenty of good companies out there providing high quality products. Astute consumers know who they are and why they cost more than the imported low price junk that has been the source of the problems.

As noted in all of the previous posts, H*ll no.

The FDA, Western Medicine, and the Big Pharmaceutical boys who spend more money lobbying then anything else have killed, maimed, and sickened more people than the whole group of Supplement Companies.

Just look at all of the "mandatory" shots recommended of late including Tamiflu right now.

Oh, and it is not "mandatory" to get the shots and immunizations in any US state, we still have some individual rights.

and the Big Pharmaceutical boys who spend more money lobbying

Yes they want to make everything a disease, they have FDA in thier back pocket most times

so then vitaims natural or processed have to be regulated, or they can stop making claims,

Personally, I see no reason to take something that isn't food in the first place. A well balanced diet provides everything the body needs. Any time we tinker with Mother Nature, we end up getting burned in the end. (and in the wallet too.)

In addition to the quality control issues that pop up from time to time, I have yet to see conclusive evidence that these things really help in any meaningful way. Some studies say yes, others say no. It may depend in large part of who sponsors the study.

I know people who swear by some supplements for joint pain, etc. Of course, eating a well-balanced diet and dropping 50 pounds would probably have done wonders for their joint pain too.

But who eats balance diets, today in a world that looks for easy fast answers as the eat thier fast foods.

I believe a small potion actually have a well balanced meal.

I know people who swear by some supplements for joint pain, etc. Of course, eating a well-balanced diet and dropping 50 pounds would probably have done wonders for their joint pain too.

If practiced from childhood, eating a simple, nutritious diet of locally grown food (so it was pretty much ripe when picked) coupled with regular exercise, would do wonders to avoid the degenerative diseases that are the bulk of our health care needs in middle to old age.

Unfortunately, eating habits are formed early that people cling to almost as dearly as religion. Don't suggest they give up the processed food that "tastes" so good. If the truth were known, many of these foods are laced with ingredients which help to make them "addictive". So I don't blame the "eater" in the same way that I don't blame most "smokers" for not being able to give up tobacco.

What a synergistic cash cow we have in our culture! Fatten (literally) them with highly processed foods, then they will eventually need to see a doctor as their bodies break down, and the fear instilled in everyone from seeing this process will make sure everyone "has to have" health insurance that is way overpriced. And drugs that are overpriced and largely harmful to the liver.

Because we get in to trouble with our forks and spoons, (and other bad habits) most of us seek the help of orthodox physicians who, for decades, have done little more than order tests and prescribe what is considered the appropriate drug(s). So many drugs require other drugs to treat the side-effects of the first and second drugs.

In this environment, it is much better to do one's best to modify eating behaviors, learn as much as possible about the body, how it works and what non-drug therapies, including vitamins help certain conditions.

Having taken responsibility for my health for the last 20 years, I can say that vitamins do have a place in restoring health for many ailments. Vitamin C has been much maligned in studies because the studies were designed to fail. Anyone who really researches the history of its use will understand this. A good book to read about vitamin C is entitled, "Curing the Incurable: Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases and Toxins", by Dr. Thomas Levy. He explains why studies fail to show positive results and references the experiences of Dr. Frederick R. Klenner, as well as other studies. (Part of the book is available for on-line reading. And I am in no way affiliated with Dr. Levy or his website.)

It would be wonderful if there were no pollution, toxins, etc. in our world. But as long as we continue on the path we are on, I'm afraid, some health therapies will be needed. And using materials that the body recognizes and utilizes makes the most sense. Drugs do not fit that category. AND it is VERY important for consumers to do their best to see if any independent testing of the vitamins they take validate the description and potency given on the label.

Excellent answer, the best yet.

Sugars added to high gluten buns and fast food restaurants and I imagine everything else they sell.

Caramelized buns used to be a catch phrase for McDonalds if memory serves me well, and I like the idea of eating ripe fruits and vegetables, something few "civilized" westerners have ever experienced.

I do the colloidal heavy metals in addition to supplements.

I also suggest reading up on hydrogen peroxide and it's benefits.

Best sinus decongestant I have ever found, suggested by an MD originally from the states who practices a combination of all of the medicinal ways in Germany now, where homeopath is recognized. I do a 50/50 mix of purified water and the peroxide as a nasal spray. Amazing results!

I am also studying Chinese and Indian healing arts when I get time.

A hospital is just about 2 miles from my house, they encourage the surrounding suburbs to take advantage of their cafeteria.

My girlfriend and myself just ate there. On todays menu we had:

- Boneless pork chops,

- Mixed vegetables, (green and yellow Beans and carrots),

- Twice baked potato

- and two drinks

total for both meals $10.80.

Very reasonable price and a balance meal and convenient, Yes we eat there often.

I would rather have increased FDA funding be spent on guaranteeing the quality and safety of the food chain, as we're pretty much at the mercy of the supermarkets for our source of food.

In regards to the question of the need to supplement, farms since about the middle of the last century have become increasingly depleted of naturally occurring nutrients, which brought about the use of chemical fertilizers. (Some believe that this is linked to the rise in such ailments as asthma and diabetes, to name a few.) Foods just don't contain all the necessary nutrients necessary for the body to function properly in a world increasingly filled with toxins trying to attack us, so supplementation has become a necessity.

Unfortunately, consumers need to become educated about the companies that produce the vitamins and supplements they are taking. Have there been any product recalls? What is the source of the raw materials in their products? Do they perform the necessary quality control checks to guarantee a safe and effective product? Do the products come from chemical sources, or do they contain whole plant sources.

Some companies, such as Nutrilite, own thousands of acres of certified 100% organic farms world-wide, control everything from the seed to the pill, and perform hundreds of tests monthly to guarantee the highest quality possible. This explains why there has never been a product recall in over 75 years and why they are the world's largest producer of vitamins and supplements.

By supporting only reputable companies such as this, sub-standard sources can be driven from the marketplace when their market share goes to zero. It's better to pay a little more for a better quality product than to pay for more government bureaucracy.

Welcome to CR4 GlenEarl:

I would rather have increased FDA funding be spent on guaranteeing the quality and safety of the food chain,

You thing the best way is to let the government handle quality........only if they take the stance China did, if they don't hold up.

as we're pretty much at the mercy of the supermarkets for our source of food.

What about transportation, drought, crop or animal disease (such as blit, Mad Cow, or back in the 70's were in Michigan the feed for Dairy cows got contaminanted)......supermarkets is only a link in the chain.

And FDA can not handle accidents such as contamimnation...basically no organization can.

(Some believe that this is linked to the rise in such ailments as asthma and diabetes, to name a few.)

You need to support facts...I can counter with having this ailments is because people are living in a more sterile environment and their immune system is weak, but that would be its only my opinion.

Foods just don't contain all the necessary nutrients necessary for the body to function properly in a world increasingly filled with toxins trying to attack us, so supplementation has become a necessity.

True, such genetically improved strains, such as seedless watermelons, and tomatoes. as well as disease resistance crops

I'm biased since I'm a Reliv distributor, but then I've been taking there products for 18 and a half years so I guess I can trust them so far. Check out www.reliv.com. The website lists all the ingredients in the products, the company has it's own manufacturing plant and does double testing of all products. They have been in business for 20 years and never had a problem w/ any of their products so. yah I trust my supplements. ( if you ahve any questions, email me at livagain1@yahoo.com ( oh by the way my ID, to Reliv is to livagain <GRIN>. These are High quality products. As to do we need supplements, well we are poisoning ourselves w/ the food we eat, the air we breath and the water we drink. Most of our foods are grown in soils that have been overfarmed and under fertilized, usually w/ just enough fertilizer to make them grow, but not containg the trace elements we need. So yes we need supplements. . As for the FDA, they do NOT regulate vitamins or supplements. They only get involved if there is a problem or complaint.
