Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Hillbilly Genius: The Great "Boss Ket"

Posted August 17, 2009 1:11 PM by dstrohl

Most men are content doing one thing and doing it well. Charles Kettering, however, did many things well and almost singlehandedly steered the American auto industry toward modernity: He refined the coil ignition system, he developed the electric self-starter, he pioneered fast-drying lacquer paint. Yet all his inventions and advancements came from the one thing he was content to do very well: research. Maurice Hendry told Boss Ket's tale in SIA #51, June 1979.

Another entry from Hemmings with pages you can't read!!!

I hope CR4 doesn't pay for these.

Ket was larger than life.

Kettering was one of the engineers on the original diesel/electric locomotives

If you click on one of the teeny pages, it should open in a new window, bigger. It can then be zoomed to a readable size (clip below):

These pages are not unreadable.

On the Hemmings page, just click the thumbnail of the first magazine page. (The URL changes to display a .jpg file) Then click the .jpg again to zoom in. The text displays in a readable size.

Hope this helps. If not, give us another shout.

Personal connection: I was in the audience when Kettering, Ohio (named for him) officially changed from being a village to being a city, in 1955. "Boss Ket" was the speaker at the ceremony, so I heard him in person. My brother still lives in the city of Kettering . . . and I was there three weeks ago.
