Is Cloud Computing Right for You?

Posted August 20, 2009 7:22 AM

Cloud computing — sometimes also called utility computing — offers the prospect of servers, computing power, and data storage being made available to customers across the Internet. Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud is perhaps the most well-known example of this technology at work. The idea: companies don't necessarily need computers, per se; they need what computers can do — computing. So, rather than owning computing hardware, simply rent what's needed — CPU cycles — as needed. Using Web servers provisioned 'in the cloud' allows a Web site to quickly boost performance, should they suddenly be discovered by Oprah, for example. Would cloud computing be a boon or a bust for your work?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Data Acquisition, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Data Acquisition today.

I will resists cloud computing as long as I can, just like I did with cell phones... Unfortunately I did end up caving in and getting a cell phone at some point, far later than the majority though.

But seriously... Ive said this over and over... cloud computing will not give a solid peace of mind to any company with sensitive information. We keep our sensitive documents on an on site storage (hardware!) which has a very reliable tape backup system. I cannot imagine any string of words to convince myself or any other management to give up our storage backup, and main storage of all our drawings, reports, customer info etc. Just not going to happen.

I do see cloud computing as a great inexpensive way for the average consumer to fulfill the majority of their computing needs. Just not the business end, with all the sensitive info.

The very phrase "cloud computing" is irritating. I get tired of all the created buzz words. Why not call it Remote Apps? Makes more sense to me. I really don't want to think a server problem is going to "rain down" on me, and that's precisely what may happen with "cloud computing".
