Solar Assisted Air Conditioning?

06/01/2015 12:49 PM

What are your thoughts on this? I heard of it but don't know much about how efficient it is or what the energy savings might be.

You should also leave the "s" out from "https"......it "foxes" some browsers.....I have no idea why, but someone here will....

It seems like a good idea. You have the most power when you need it most.

I also read on the cool roof, non white paint, I don't think its commercially available, I'd like to see a cost on that

I would be wary... not sure how mass flow is impacted and if you add a solar collector to an existing unit - you'll likely void any remaining warranties.

Also, not an area of expertise, but if you increase the superheat of the gas entering the condenser more of the first portion of the condenser will be required to desuperheat the vapor before the condensing process begins, right?

So, not seeing what this gains you... but again - I'm a layman on this subject so I must be missing something.

There is some confusion on these solar assisted units....the one that circulates the refrigerant from the compressor discharge through the solar collector and then to the condenser doesn't make any sense to me, nor do the explanations I've been able to locate....

The other, and better known type uses solar collectors to assist with the electrical power being used for the system....They started with a single collector to power the condenser fan motor, and now I see them with 15 or so collectors mounted on the roof to partially compensate for the energy being used...the on and off nature of solar power doesn't lend itself to a precisely engineered refrigeration circuit....however the solar panels being added at the same time as a new A/C system does make sense as a lot of A/C companies also install solar panel systems as well, so it's a natural progression of economy of services....

Gas fired refrigerators have been around for years, why not solar power?

I've worked on many nat gas fired chillers....the gas has a burner like a furnace, it does the same thing as a compressor IE it takes a low temp , low pressure gas and makes it a high temp high pressure gas.........same output done a different way

When I worked for the Trane company in 1976-77, the sales of their Lithium Bromide absorption systems was moving to non existent The problem I recall was facilities not wanting to keep a steam boiler operating all summer. Israel, was purchasing them, and using a solar water heat system to provide the energy input.

Might still be used on some nuke subs.

I did install one solar powered absorption system many years ago. It was on a government building, and was hideously expensive....as I recall it was for testing and evaluation....nobody wanted to work on it, and nobody else knew how to...The entire roof was covered with thermal collectors, and the system still had to have an alternative heating source...These absorption systems work well if you have a free, or very cheap heat source...but good luck finding someone to work on it...

Was the extra heat source for night time air conditioning?

That would make sense so you could have cooling at night. I wonder what fuel consumption rates would be?

Here's a nice article discussing the comparison of electric compression and absorption units using waste heat...

Would I be able to use the heat output from uh...say an A/C unit nearby?

Btu theft is punishable by added heat which may result in runaway situation...

Harold, there's a strange looking bush in front of the air conditioner, did you plant it?

Yes solar electric A/C works wonders for us in the heat of the North Carolina summers. We enter our totally solar electric boat (18inch draft) into four foot deep water on the sound side of Myrtle Grove Island, the boat settles aground on the tide outflow, we walk across the dune path into the Atlantic Ocean, swim, return to our solar electric powered boat, shower and eat our meals in air conditioned comfort at the peak heat of the lunchtime sun.

At night, if it gets muggy and no breeze, the windows get closed and the A/C runs the night and gets fully recharged in the morning. Nothing could be finer that to be in Carolina in the ..... Yes we are living it and proving it every time out.

Care to share the specifics of your solar electric air conditioning system? There is no mention of the system on the website you linked.

While perhaps not totally relevant to the conversation, I have a home brew solar heater that has been switched to pull heat out of our house as the swap cooler cools the house. Cooler is being converted to run on 12 volts dc like the heater to take advantage of the battery bank and solar panels. If the cooler performs half as well as the heater worked this last Winter I'll be very happy with it!
