This web site looks like it may have some useful background information, tiwawane.

In general, static electricity is a problem with industrial and communications equipment. If there are applications for static electricity, I'd like to know about them, too!

Electrostatics are used for air filtration, and in paint booths (to attract paint particles to the object being painted) and for other uses, but most of the time, static electricity is considered a nuisance or even a hazard (sometimes a very serious hazard). Small amounts will destroy electronic circuits, and it doesn't take much more to cause explosions of flammable gases.

Static electrical discharges are also believed to be responsible for explosions of dry combustible powders (which includes grains and just about any hydrocarbon based product if it is of small enough particle size and dry).

Static is usually dangerous with regard to electronic chips, electronics generally and of course in the presence of inflammable gases and liquids.

I would expect people with a pacemaker to be carefull, but mostly its just uncomfortable for the rest of us.....

There again, I guess the final voltage, if high enough, could prove fatal......but it would probably have to be in the million volt class I would guess....

I once read that a typical static discharge from finger to door knob can be greater thatn 10,000V albeut < .1A

It's the current that will kill you. A double A battery can kill you in the right conditions.

Back in the day....when men were men and real TVs were black and white, the standard joke amongst TV repairmen was that of course static discharge could kill you: when you jerked your arm, broke the picture tube, and cut your wrist on the glass.

Otherwise, if you have a weak heart, or a pacemaker, I would stay away from it. The rest of us just have to be careful to stay below 5 mA of current.
