Light Boards for Classrooms

08/11/2015 7:50 AM

This look like a good idea that is long overdue.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1I4Afti6XE

I hope it has auto erase.

Some professors were better than others using a chalk board or white board but some really stunk at it and it was hard to follow the material.

This seems like a very good improvement.

That didn't work so hot. The two lines he wrote below the initial statement were just pixel blobs that didn't resolve until about 30 seconds later.

Leonardo da Vinci mastered mirror writing.

I was wondering how he reversed the image. He uses his wife's full length mirror in front of the video camera.

If the result is a video, I suspect some enterprising programmer could come up with a cell phone app to make a reverse video. For a live classroom, I could imagine a lightboard turned sideways and a large mirror at 45 degrees in front of it. He could see the classroom reflected in the mirror and the students could see him.

Overall, a great idea. I wonder why nobody has done this before.

"I suspect some enterprising programmer could come up with a cell phone app to make a reverse video."

What app? open up your camera phone, change from the back/'stalker' camera to the front/'selfie' camera and wink at yourself. The cellphones already mirror the front camera by default.

In one of my calculus programs, our professor would have atleast 50 feet of boards that he would use up during a lecture.....

It was all we could do to write it down...... it was do a point that, you could either try to understand it, and fail to write it down and forget it later, because you didn't write it down..... or write it down and figure it out later.

Writing it down what he wrote on the board and figuring it out later always seemed to work. He did do a very good job of using examples.

I heard of a prof that would write with his right hand and erase with his left.

Which hand are you referring to, the left, the right or the center?

And hard to tell which is the left and right of dancers in dimmed and glittering lights. Far worse when one is drunk.

I got to ask.......Why didn't you just photograph the boards?

Obviously this would be a bit expensive back in the days of camera film.

Re: Light Boards for Classrooms

and who do you know would do that.....

and who (as a college student) could afford it

And what professor in their right mind would let this kind of disturbance....

That's the short list.

I have to say, I worked at a company about 10 years ago, that had a white board that you could press a button and it would transfer the white board to a roll of thermal transfer paper.... (the old styled fax paper), this they had for a while.

I thought was pretty cool. I can't even count how many times I did a P&ID layout and then transfer them (copy by hand) to paper, this would have been great. But the 'X' and 'Y' was distorted .....

Well I wasn't suggesting using flash bulbs.

However nowdays we have the technology. Finally a sensible use for cellphone cameras or the GoPro.

I had a similar situation when I took Calc. The prof would write out a proof, and when he ran out of board, he would go back to the beginning and start erasing the beginning of the proof, and continue.

One day we all got into class early, and put a stub of chalk into his eraser, We set this eraser in the chalk tray and we made a sign on the board, with an arrow pointing to the eraser.

The sign said "THE SMITH ERASER! WRITES AND ERASES ALL AT THE SAME TIME!"

I can't remember the profs last name so I just called him Smith.

Got a smart-phone/camera? Just snap pictures of the board. I do this at meetings all the time.

That's a neat trick to be able to write backwards like that. For those who can't write backwards (I think it would take a lot of practice), there is the SmartBoard. These are in use at the colleges near me.
